Office 365 keeps reverting color theme back to Colorful

Question

Wednesday, January 9, 2019 7:27 AM

I have the same problem as this post from 2015.

Every time I restart my computer or if I restart all office apps, the theme is no longer gray but colorful again. I keep setting it to gray. I have version 1812 (11126.20188).

I have identified the issue. It's ESR (enterprise State Roaming) that causes this. When I log in to a computer that has this it is affecting all my other computers). Sorry then it was my fault.

Hi,

Does the issue happen after you update Office to version 1812 (11126.20118)? Is there any issue before? I suggest you can check the following registry settings on current computer:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\policies\microsoft\office\16.0\common
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common

Check the UI Theme settings, change it to 3 for dark gray, 4 for Black and 0 for colorful.

Additionally, I notice that the Office theme settings are going with your Office account in Office. In other words, if you use the Office 365 ProPlus product on two computers and all Office clients are signed in with your word account under File > Account > User Information, the Office theme settings will be remembered and synced between two computers. Please check if this is similar in your scenario.

The only key is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\UI Theme = 3

Do you have the Office account signed in with multiple Office devices? As I replied above, the Office theme is synced with Office accounts.

This still persists with build 1902. It would be nice if this could be fixed instead of me being randomly blasted with a white screen every time I restart my office. It's very annoying.

Did not do it prior to 1902. And yes, I modified in registry and it gets reverted.

I'm so tired of Microsoft.

I started getting this yesterday after installing (1) KB451721 2019-09 update and (2) Visio 2019. I don't have either of the registry settings. Seems to revert to "colorful" randomly.

I don't have the registry settings either and it is happening quite randomly. I do think it may be tied to an update since I didn't have this problem in September.

I'm running Office Professional Plus 2016.
