Cryptic and Obscure user accounts in AD ?

Question

Tuesday, January 19, 2016 9:46 PM

Hi,

I'm a newbie here in managing the new Exchange Server 2013 organization, hence can someone please clarify each of the highlighted entries in my AD please:

I only know about System Mailbox account but what about the rest of the disabled account ?

Can I move them to custom OU for cleanup with no effect on email flow ?

Thanks.

Hi,

There are 5 arbitration mailboxes created when Exchange is installed:

  • SystemMailbox{1f05a927-2346-4b0f-8c8c-6bf7e1f25979}
  • SystemMailbox{bb558c35-97f1-4cb9-8ff7-d53741dc928c}
  • SystemMailbox{e0dc1c29-89c3-4034-b678-e6c29d823ed9}
  • Migration.8f3e7716-2011-43e4-96b1-aba62d229136
  • FederatedEmail.4c1f4d8b-8179-4148-93bf-00a95fa1e042

The discovery search mailbox is used for multi-mailbox searches and the Exchange Online application account would be involved in a Hybrid setup.

Thanks.

Hi ,

Agree with Mark, Microsoft is also not recommended to move these AD accounts, that may cause some indefinite issue.

In addition, I also recommend you refer to the following articles to understand these mailboxes:

Arbitration Mailbox Exchange 2010 and 2013

 What is an arbitration mailbox

Hi,

It's best to leave them where they are in AD however you can move the mailboxes to a different database if you want.

Thanks.
