Microsoft Visio Viewer 2016 and IE 11

Question

Wednesday, May 25, 2016 2:04 PM

Hello all,

is the Microsoft Visio Viewer 2016 able to run with IE11?

We tried three different computers (2x Windows 10 / IE11, 1x Windows 7 / IE11)

On Windows 7 it asked to download or open the file, on Windows 10 it said "[...] was not able to complete the operation" and then showed a blank tab with the Visio menu bar on top.

Thanks and

Best regards,
Phillip

Hi Phillip,

In the following Visio Viewer 2016 System Requirements, Internet Explorer 11 is not listed in the supported program:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51188

It is suggested to use supported program for Visio Viewer 2016. Personal suggestion, please try to use IE 11 in Compatibility View and Visio Viewer is implemented as an ActiveX control that loads and renders Visio drawings inside Internet Explorer. Please refer to the steps below to change the way Internet Explorer handles ActiveX controls:1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
3. On the Security tab, click the Custom level button.
4. Scroll down the Security Settings list until you see ActiveX controls and plug-ins.
5. For Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls, click Enable.
6. Scroll down to Download signed ActiveX controls and click Enable or Prompt.
7. Scroll down to Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins and click Enable or Prompt.
8. Scroll down to Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting and click Enable or Prompt.

Click OK and restart IE. Open Visio file to have a try.

Dear Winnie,

I noticed that it's not officially supported.

We tried enabling all ActiveX settings, but it had no effect.
I'm a bit confused why the 2016 version of the viewer isn't supported in IE11 but the main question is answered. Thank you!

Phillip

Same problem here - downloaded the 64 bit viewer - page is blank in IE 11. Followed Activex security settings below - however now IE 11 GPF's when trying to load the diagram.

Hey everyone just a FYI.  I was able to get around this by opening in Open Office where I could then save it as or print to PDF etc.

Hope this helps.

I have exactly the same problem.

Scenario:

VisioViewer ActiveX installed as a default Office components (2013 or 2016) on Windows 7 and Windows 10 machines, both using IE11.

On Windows 7 + IE11 clicking on a Visio file (stored on SharePoint) works like this: a copy of the file is downloaded and the local copy is opened in IE correctly.

On Windows 10 + IE11 clicking on a Visio file (stored on SharePoint) throws the error "You'll need a new app to open this file".

It looks to me as a bug as if I right-click on the same link and select "Open in new tab" it works exactly like on Windows 7 and the file is displayed correctly in IE.

Another workaround is to download a copy and then open it.
