Question

I have just moved to windows 10
All my programs are Microsoft yet, when maximised, windows open behind the taskbar so I am obliged to hide the taskbar in order to see the bottom part of the window. The same occurs with dialog boxes whose size cannot be altered I have to hide the takskbar in order to click the buttons at the bottom of the dialog box.
This did not happen in windows 7
Why is this happening and how do I stop it Note I have 4 computers running windows 10 and they are all doing this therefore it is not a 'fault' with my computer it is a problem with windows 10
Cheers Rob

Hi Rob,
Try to uncheck the AutoHide and check the lock the toolbar from the taskbar properties. change the Display resolution to highest resolution. change the performance to Best Performance.
Best Sam Please mark as answered if this solves your issue

Hi Rob,
This is also normal and the default behavior when you first open a new window, maximized. It should stretch between the top of the screen and the top of the Taskbar and not be behind the Taskbar.
If you have the Taskbar set to Autohide, this makes a maximized window slightly larger, because it stretches all the way to the bottom of the screen and if you pop the Taskbar up, then it will cover the bottom of the open window.

Done everything you say windows still open behind the taskbar I have reverted back to windows 7 because this and other issues with the taskbar in windows 10 are a cumulative nuisance and are affecting my efficiency of working

Same issues.
Amazing that after almost 2 years from the public release, and MS still has not fixed this bug.

App windows or dialog boxes that are not resizable, as well as any window that is not maximized, are free to be moved BEHIND the LOCKED taskbar. This is beyond idiotic. Where is the setting that I can change it to force all windows and dialog boxes and everything and anything whatsoever to be confined to the visible area of the displayed desktop, up to but not including the locked taskbar?
Now that I have stated it as concisely as possible in no uncertain terms, and it takes like 25 words to do, it should be clear why I have had such a hard time searching the internet to find a solution to this extremely annoying and infuriatingly inept oversight by Microsoft.
Are we the only 5 people using windows 10 that find this to be unacceptable, or is everyone else doing something we don't know about??

You're definitely not the only ones.
I really really didn't want to do it because I knew it was going to be a crapfest, but I had no choice and was forced to move to Windows 10 because my old laptop was physically falling apart so I had to buy a new one, and of course they only sell them with Windows 10.
I have wasted the last 3 days trying to make that piece of crap fit to work with (instead of actually being productive in that period).
And the bottom of windows being behind the taskbar is only one of the extremely annoying things that are wrong with Windows 10 (did I mention how slow it was initially and how even after I fixed the memory settings that were causing it, it is still somewhat slower than my old machine even though I am working on a new hardware with better characteristics?), but is especially disgusting given how much it affects productivity -- I have many years of deeply ingrained habits of working with maximized windows, and I also do a lot of work for which information displayed precisely at the bottom of the windows is of critical importance; now that's hidden and I have to manually make non-maximized windows as large as the area outside of the taskbar. What a load of crap...

have to manually make non-maximized windows as large as the area outside of the taskbar.
Alternatively, if you have a second monitor, use it without a Taskbar and then just throw problem windows over to it. Win-Shift-CursorRight. In my case my tablet is always in Portrait orientation and has my Taskbar so what I would like is for more apps to consider where they were last closed and open there. Some do but in the case of Miracast most don't wait for it to be started. Another irritant.

Rob,
This issue is most likely caused by the fact that you or someone using your PC has put it there. It is not always you dragging the window down. Even though you have 4 computers(just a thought), it is very likely that the mouse had a spasm, the software glitched, or something of that nature. Again, not sure as this has not happened to me or anyone i know.
Hope that helps,

Thanks Sam. I had the same problem as Rob, and your solution worked. I locked the the taskbar, disabled auto hide in taskbar settings. I then opened the display resolution, changed to a lower resolution and then reset back to the highest resolution. After doing this, windows would no longer appear behind the taskbar.
Many thanks,
Branton

Thanks! I turned off the AutoHide and now my windows are displaying as normal.

I feel for you man... I can sense your frustration and have been communicating with the Windows Team for many years on similar issues with Windows. Said that, you must know that, Windows is a "Work-In-Progress" now and always; this mean that MS will keep taking our input into account but only those suggestions that is aligned with their roadmap - I know, some issues like the one you've indicated should be given to resolve; and to add to your issue and even worse is, what about the edge of the monitor (R/L) Apps move freely beyond the edge without any restriction - The OS in the 21st Century should incorporate some AI to know if the system has 1, 2, or more monitors and where they are situated, and never allow apps to move past the edge of the viewing area/s.
Are you listening MS? - Play nice and have some common sense when reviewing and releasing features and settings, or simply setup a both in malls and get people feedback if you can't act on our feedback for heaven sake.

Whoa! What the... Oh come on! Rob has a real problem here, and he's genuinely frustrated! Certainly we can do better than to suggest these ridiculous causes! The mouse had a spasm? What??
Windows as a setting for everything. *Everything! *Granted, the settings my not always be intuitive or easy to find, but they're there.
Here is how to solve the problem:
Right-click the taskbar and select "Taskbar Settings"
Turn OFF "Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode"

This worked for me. When I was full screening a window the bottom would hide behind the taskbar. This fixed that in seconds.

This fixed the aforementioned problem but created a new one for me!!! Now most of the icons in the notification area have disappeared. Normally I have most icons on in the notification area which count to about 12 or icons. Now it only shows 4 icons.

Original problem was: {{ When MAXIMIZED, windows open behind the taskbar }}
YouTube link was for FULLSCREEN doesn't quite take up the fullscreen b/c the taskbar hides it.
These are subtly not the same problem. Fullscreening a video or game is not the same as maximizing a window. You used to be able to set the Taskbar such that maximized programs would stretch from the top of the screen to the top of the taskbar (assuming the taskbar was at the bottom). But the idiots at MS intentionally removed this ability for no good reason whatsoever and have never reinstated it.

How has this not been fixed yet? Who in their right mind would even make it so that the window goes behind the taskbar?
"Did you read the fine print at the bottom?" Nope, taskbar was in the way.
This is going to blow up as medical industry moves to windows 10.

Right clicking and select 'Lock Task Bar'. Try turning that on and off?

No dude.
I have had a similar problem since windows 95 and nothing has ever been done to resolve it, the problem just gets transferred to the new OS .My task bar is up top (always has been) and a lot of programs ALWAYS start under it so I have to move the task bar, drag the program down then put the task bar back.
This stuff used to stress me severely but now I just calmly accept it and move on. It is Microsoft after all and like most corporations they only care about profit so....

You clearly don't have a clue. What does performance have to do with this? It's an issue with Explorer.
Thursday, March 28, 2019 7:21 AM
Since the last Win 10 updates I'm having the same problem. Didn't have this experienced before. My task bar is placed on the top of the desktop. Windows like Outlook reminder, Word, Excel, Windows dialog boxes, etc. are opened with the top of the window behind the taskbar, even they were closed in a different position. It is totally annoying. I had today an appointment at a Microsoft store help desk. The employee witnessed it and saw it for the first time.

Try the below:
1) Open the task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
2) Select "Windows Explorer"
3) Click the "Restart" button in the bottom right corner of the task manager windows
Found it on the website https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/308495/windows-10-taskbar-will-be-in-front-of-fullscreen-games and it worked for me.

I sometimes need to move a window off to the side (with a little showing) BUT: new windows should open fully in-view, and there should be a window option from the taskbar icon to bring any window fully into view (eg position at top-left so window controls are accessible).
Thursday, June 13, 2019 1:08 AM
same with taskbar on the right - windows start under it. I move the window. Finish work, shut down, start up/logon, re-open the window and it's back under the taskbar (even though the last time I used it, it was in the clear). Server 2016, like windows 10.

It is not Rob alone... There are many and I am one of them... I am facing the same issue as Rob in Win 10. Some of my windows app (bottom) goes behind the taskbar... This is become a big obstacle for me at work. (MS Office sits fine.)
I have been a Windows user from the 90s. I have tried all known options and settings but couldn't find a solution as yet. This is annoying...
