Accessing Time Capsule Disk with Windows 10

Question

Sunday, July 14, 2019 9:49 AM

I successfully have an older 2 TB Time Capsule setup as my router with Windows 10, and my internet is working fine. However, I cannot gain access to the files on the Time Capsule's Disk. I cannot get the Time Capsule to show up as a location under Network in File Explorer.

I've attempted to reset the IP address of the Time Capsule and/or computer multiple times unsuccessfully. I've reverted to my original settings below. This is a 4th Gen Time Capsule:

-TC IP Address: 10.0.1.1

-TC Version: 7.8.1

-Airport Utility Version 5.6.1

-Time Capsule set to Configure IPv4 using DHCP to IP: 68.0.122.146 & Subnet: 255.255.248.0 & Router Address 68.0.120.1

-Workgroup: WORKGROUP, WINS Server: 68.0.122.146

I have been struggling with this for many hours to no avail, any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. I can provide additional information if needed. Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you for posting in this forum.

What is the current network configuration of Time Capsule? Can you successfully ping this time capsule from Windows 10?

If you can ping this time capsule, can you successfully access it via \IP address of the time capsule? If you can't access it, what's the error message?

Best Regards,

Leon

Hi Leon,

Thanks so much for the reply. The Time Capsule has an ethernet input from my modem currently, and the internet/wireless is working fine. I tried to upload photos, but I can't since i'm not a verified forum member.

In Airport Utility, the following info is displayed when the "Internet Icon" is selected:

TCP/IP Tab:

Configure IPv4: Using DHCP

IP Address: 68.0.122.146

Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0

Router Address: 68.0.120.1

DNS Servers: 68.105.28.11 and 68.105.29.11

Internet Connection Tab:

Connect Using: Ethernet

Ethernet WAN Port: Automatic (Default)

Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address

DHCP Tab:

DHCP Beginning Address: 10.0.1.2

DHCP Ending Address: 10.0.1.200

DHCP Lease: 24 hours

NAT Tab:

Default Host: 10.0.1._  (box blank)

Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol is checked

If I click on the Disk Tab I can see how much space and used data is on the TC disk (eg. Capacity 1.8 TB, with 495 GB available)

If the Airport icon is selected, then the following info is displayed

Summary Tab:

Status: Normal

Version: 7.8.1

Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network

Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal

Channel: 157 (Automatic), 11 (Automatic)

Wireless Clients: 4

Plus some other extraneous information

Time Capsule Tab:

Time Capsule Name: JaredsTC   (JaredsTC.local)

Allow setup over WAN box is un-checked

Thanks!

Jared

Leon,

I can ping 10.0.1.1 successfully from the CMD prompt, but I can't seem to access it via \10.0.1.1 in the file explorer address bar.

Hello Jared,

It's not safe to post those information on a public forum.

Besides, you have not answered my other questions.

Best Regards,

Leon,

Thanks, removed the info. I can ping both 10.0.1.1 and 10.0.1.2 successfully.

When I try to enter the IP address (either 10.0.1.1 or 10.0.1.2) into the address bar of Network tab of File Explorer I get the error message "Windows cannot access \10.0.1.1" "Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose."

Error Code: 0x80004005

Unspecified error.

When I click Diagnose it states: "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"

Hi Jared,

"Windows 10 can't access TC."

10.0.1.2 is the IP address of Windows 10, right? What is the IP address of TC? From your description, 10.0.1.1 is not the IP address of the TC.

I am not familiar with the Time Capsule and the Airport Utility. I am following the usual troubleshooting ideas to check the cause of the problem.

Please check if Windows can successfully ping the Time Capsule. If Windows 10 can ping the Time Capsule, then check if Windows 10 can access the Time Capsule via \the IP address of the Time Capsule. If can't, please post the error message.

Best Regards,

Leon

Nobody told you to go to do the following:

Control Panel -> Programs -> Turn Windows Features on or off

Once here, scroll down to SMB 1.0/CIFS and install.

Reboot, the run the same path that you'd tried. (\10.0.1.1\

Windows 10 by default doesn't have SMB 1.0 installed, but those Time Capsule boxes need it.

Cheers!

I have the same problem as JSeay86. I wanted to try your solution but I can't find the SMB 1.0/CIFS you mentioned. Can you help me?
