DedupJob Garbage Collection stuck at 0%

Question

Wednesday, May 8, 2019 10:37 PM

I started Garbage Collection on a volume with de-duplication enabled and 30 hours later I'm still at 0% with no file space being freed.  I can see that there is a process running by looking up the process ID; however, so far there does not seem to be any progress.  This is on a 1.8 TB drive.  I feel like 30 hours in the progress should have moved from 0% and that some space should have been freed.  Any ideas?  Is this a common problem?

Hi ,

Please first check deduplication events to see if there are something related for us to troubleshooting.

To view deduplication events, in File Explorer, navigate to Applications and Services Logs, click Microsoft, click Windows, and then click Deduplication.

Run the get-dedup* commands to see more details and upload the screenshot.

Oddly, after 40+ hours of run time, the GC job finally began to free space.  It still reports as 0% complete but it has freed up 200 GB of space.  I'm guessing this is just a flaw in the progress reporting mechanism?

Hi ,

It seems that deduplication is working and has identified the files but the stats are not being populated.

It seems like a product limitation, as you've seen from the following thread:

Trying to Unoptimize a Dedup Volume - Progress stays at 0%
