Need help running Topaz Gigapixel AI on a VM

Question

Monday, October 7, 2019 8:16 PM

I use a photo enhancement software called Topaz Gigapixel AI. I would like to use it on a VM because it requires a lot of processing from my GPU. It is possible to download it to the VM, but nothing happens when I try to run it. It won't open. I think it's because Topaz requires a GPU and when no physical GPU is detected (I used the N-Series VM and tried to find the GPU using CPUID, but it wasn't listed) it won't start. I have no idea how to fix this or trick the software. I am new to using VM's so maybe I am missing something obvious. Any help is appreciated! There is a free version available for download that is an exact copy of the real version, but you only have it for 30 days. You can easily replicate my situation by downloading it from their website for free.

i raised a support request with Topaz Gigapixel team and i got the reply as below.

Actual Reply is here.

"

Our apps aren't compatible with VMs due to the way Azure manages your computer's resources for processing. You can't use it in Azure VM at the moment!

SOLVED. Their program is not compatible with VMs.

You likely just need to setup the GPU drivers/ software. See the following: /en-us/azure/virtual-machines/windows/n-series-driver-setup

Then make sure you pick the right size VM according to the system requirements on the software page.

https://help.topazlabs.com/hc/en-us/articles/360012811791-A-I-Gigapixel-System-Requirements

Also, at the bottom of the GPU setup doc, there are links to the Nvidia set guides as well

Thanks for your reply. It still does not work. My N-series VM should meet the minimum requirements. When I try to run the program it opens for a split second as a white box then it closes. It's like it won't open because something is different or something is missing on the VM. It works on my 5 year old 300$ school laptop so it definetely should work on the N-series virtual machines.

Were you able to get the drivers for the GPU installed and actually detect the GPU now? We should at least get that part cleared :)

No I can't detect it with CPUID :( Would it be weird if I asked you to message me somewhere so I could give you the login to my VM? I really don't know what I am doing, I tried following the installation guides but I might have messed up. It would be extremely helpful since I really don't know anything about VM's or troubleshooting.

Are you able to detect the GPU in Device Manager at least?

/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/windows/n-series-driver-setup#verify-driver-installation

Unfortunately logging into a users VM is not something I am able to due for security reasons.
