Resource Group location change

Question

Thursday, May 3, 2018 12:57 PM

I just had a support call with an engineer about my resource group being in another location than all the resources inside. She said it doesn't matter. I just want to double check, because I am not sure if she fully understood and had the neccessary knowledge. Apparently it's not something you can change, so you have to "move" the resources inside and that would take me all day because I would have to recreate my VM, so of course I don't want to do that if it doesn't matter anyway. I didn't really get if she understand that. The Resource Group was created during a support call with another engineer where he helped me deploy the VM. We must have missed the part where you choose location for the resource group, but all the resources for the vm are in the right location.

No it does not. A resource group is just a logical grouping of resources. So there is zero impact of your resource group being in East US and your resources being in say west US. It is just a way to logically put all things related to a product inside a resource group so you then can delete the entire resource group and all its resources at one when done with them :)

You can't change the location of a resource group. Your resources inside a resource group need not be in the same region as that of the resource group. They can be in any region where the resources are supported.

Moving a resource only moves it to a new resource group. The new resource group may have a different location, but that does not change the location of the resource. You could refer to Move resources to new resource group or subscription for details.

Thank you, just to be clear, does it have any performance or any other important impacts of any kind?
