DFS Share isn't accessible over VPN

Question

Friday, September 21, 2018 10:11 AM

Hello,

we are using DFS with replication on 2 file-servers. Everything works fine except the connection to one share over VPN.

The structure of DFS:

  • 3 namespaces with different shared folders
  • replication over all folders to another fileserver
  • 2 domaincontrollers over different locations

So if I'm try to connect to e.g \domain.local\test1 over VPN all works fine. I'm able to access all files and folders. After that I created a new namespace (\domain.local\test2). If i try to access this namespace it works also, but when I try to access a folder in this namespace, I get the error message, that Windows didn't find the network path.

I also tried to access the fileserver directly over the IP, but I'm still not able to access the folders (Path not found).

Do I have to set some special settings to it? Because the other namespace works fine.

Hey,

I found the problem: The working folder includes the Domainname (fs01.testdomain.local).

Thank you for your help :)

Any Access Lists in your Network configuration that could block the VPN subnet to access your target server ?

Are you able to access the server (the one that host the target folder) using either the server name or IP address ?

Where's the folder target for in this namespace? like below, you could check the path for this folder.

Please locate the path for this folder, in my test the folder target are on two server, paths are  \dfs1\information, \dfs2\information11. Please also check NTFS and Sharing permission for the target folder. Make sure permission are set correctly.

>I also tried to access the fileserver directly over the IP, but I'm still not able to access the folders (Path not found).

And what about other file servers? Could you access the share folder on other file server successfully?

Best Regards,

Mary

Hey,

I'm able to access another folder on the same fileserver, so I think this is problem is caused by something else - maybe the DFS?

Yeah, I'm able to access both server over there IP and DNS name.
