July 2012 Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 RC installation problem

Question

Thursday, July 5, 2012 12:57 PM | 1 vote

Hi,

When trying to install vsupdate_KB2703187.exe it fails:

Unable to locate package source

No internet connection detected

Please provide a location to search for the packages

C:\TEMP\packages\Preparation.exe

The machine does not have an internet connection. Is there a way around this?

Thanks,

Tero

I got it to work - when it asks you to locate "preparation.exe" or "kb2703187.msp":

  1. Open *** Chrome ***  NOT Internet Explorer  -  for some @#$*! reason IE doesn't work (at least for me)
  2. Download the file from one of the links below --> to a "known folder":

--> Now, go back to the installer and browse to the "known folder" to locate the file you just downloaded

(BTW, you can find these URLs in the log files Barry Wang mentions above)

Have the same problem.

Found Preparation.exe in \ProgramData\Package Cache\E86A23974CE5A0245A319AF8E05C1E9A603200EA\ but then get another error message:

Unable to locate package source: kb2703187.msp

My computer have internet connection through proxy with authorization

Hi Tero,

Your issue seems due to network.

Do you have a internet connection to install this product?

Or may you check if your network is healthy when installing?

I suggest you ask your IT Group to help you double check this.

Additionally, to reproduce this issue, please show me your OS version, your network status.

Also, please refer to %temp% folder and search all logs about this update KB2703187, zip them and upload it to me via Skydrive.

Thanks,

Hi Resnanskiy,

Seems your issue was due to corrupt package download.

So may you please first change your network without a proxy and download the package again.

After that show me if you can install it again.

If failed, refer to %temp% folder and search all logs about this update KB2703187, zip them and upload it to me via Skydrive.

Thanks,

I have the same problem.  I tried re-downloading the patch to a different directory and re-running it, but it dodn't seem to make any difference.

It looks like the problem is:

Failed attempt to download URL: 'bits://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=251624&clcid=0x409'

BTW, I have no idea how to upload the logs to you via Skydrive.

Is there a workaround yet?

Mike Gleason:

Your workaround work fine. Thank's. In addition, installer also need intelliTrace_net.msi. It can be found at VS 2012 RC distribution ISO.

Barry Wang:

Where is candies for Mike Gleason?

Hi Resnyanskiy,

Let's wait for OP "Tero" to get back on this issue. We have that policy.

Also, glad to hear your issue was fixed.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for sharing your solution here. It may help others with same issue. I appreciate it.

Hi,

What is the supported mechanism to install the update in locked down corporate environments where the developers cannot download .exe files?

Perfoming a failed install to determine the required files in order to provide a list of files to the operations team does not seem like a good solution.

Regards,

Werner

Hi All,

Since the solution worked for some customers and op is not back.

I'll close this thread.

Hi,

Sorry I haven't reply. Had a long summer vacation, then came the RTM and I completely forgot this RC issue.

BTW the RTM of Visual Studio 2012 Update 1 (vsupdate_KB2707250.exe) has a perfect solution for us installing updates to machines w/o internet connection http://blogs.msdn.com/b/robcaron/archive/2012/11/26/how-to-install-visual-studio-2012-update-1-offline.aspx

Thanks,
