Question
Monday, June 11, 2018 5:57 AM
Hi,
I found that if the remote computer is disconnected, the client only has 20 attempts to try to reconnect the server computer. And if no connection is made before that, Remote Desktop will stop running and won't take any further actions.
The question is can we configure this number of attempts for Remote Desktop so that it can keep trying to reconnect to the server computer till the connection is successfully made? Thanks.

Looking at Description of the Automatic Reconnection Feature in Windows and https://www.donkz.nl/overview-rdp-file-settings/ this can be upped to a max 200 by setting in it in the Default.rdp hidden file in the Documents folders.
Add;
AutoReconnect Max Retries:i:200
Save the file and it will retry 200 times. Tested on Windows 10 appears fine. (setting it higher than 200 stops MSTSC from working)

Thanks Karen for your reply. This certainly helps me understand how to configure the Remote Desktop further more. However, because our application aims to keep trying the re-connection without any limitations, I just wonder is there any other way to get around setting up the maximum number of connection attempts?

Hi, -Mr Happy- here, Karen proposed my reply as an answer so was my reply by the way.
I cannot see a way get the limit of 200 of number of reconnects.
So beyond that can I ask what situation that is not enough? That will retry for over an hour, so what requirement is this and can this be addressed by not downing the connecting or RDP host for that long?

Yes, just as Mr Happy's viewpoint. 200 is the max value we can set.

Thanks Mr Happy.
We currently have a data acquisition system which requires fully automated remote access. We aim to reduce manual operation as much as possible, which means whenever the ethernet network or the server computer is off the line, the client computer can keep trying to re-establish the connection till the ethernet or the server computer is back online.
However, if 200 is the max value and it can keep retry for over an hour, that is already much better than the default settings.
Thank you for your answers.
