I'm in a SharePoint group that has Full Control. However, when I try to add a user to a another group in the site, a message appears which says "You do not have permission to add users to the selected SharePoint group." Is there any particular reason for this message? (This is not a child site which inherits permissions from another site.)
Thanks.

Hi
Group security can differ from site security, you would see that message when you have no permission for the group.
While setting up a security group in SharePoint there are two fileds that matter when it comes to group membership updates:
1. Group owner: (The owner can change anything about the group such as adding and removing members or deleting the group. Only one user or group can be the owner.)
and
2. Group Settings > Who can edit the membership of the group? which is by default set to Group Owner, can change this to group members. Ask your SCA for help on this if you feel you should be able to add people to this group. SCAs and Group Owner have the ability to change the group permissions.

Why dont you add yourself in the Site collection administrator group and try out adding the user again??

The company I work for only has server admins in the Site collection administrator group. I'm not a server admin.
Back to the original question though - when I try to add a user, why might a message appear which says "You do not have permission to add users to the selected SharePoint group" even though I'm in a group with Full Control.
Thanks.

Hi, if you want to allow group members to edit group membership your administrator needs to set this property at group level. For this, open the group and go to Settings -> Group Settings and change the "Who can edit the membership of the group?" property.
