Microsoft Edge - Not putting extensions on downloaded files

Question

Tuesday, September 19, 2017 4:42 PM

I have a fresh build of the latest Microsoft Windows 10 creators update with all security patches installed as of today.  Microsoft Edge is not working very well.  Whenever I download a file it fails and says retry.  When I click retry it appears to complete the download but it doesn't put an extension on the file it downloaded so I do not think it's complete.  Internet Explorer works just fine.  Microsoft Edge is an awful browser and I just can't belive Microsoft made it it's default without fully identifying all the bugs that it presents.  I'm going to convert our whole company over to Google Chrome.  Get it together Microsoft.

If anyone has run into this issue with Edge let me know.  I did run sfc /scannow and it said it fixed some issues but this problem still exists.  I have not found a good way to uninstall or reinstall Edge, nor is there a way to reset it that I've found.  Way to make it easier for us Microsoft Engineers, you guys are a bunch of hacks and not true Professionals.

So I did more investigating this morning.  Edge is in fact putting an extension on the files it downloads but they are a .txt extension.  I did some research on this issue and many people are having the same problem after they upgrade to the creators update.  I found the following fix and applied it and it resolved the issue:

C:\Users\BROKEN_USER"\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache

rename counters2.dat -> counters2.poo (or anything else that amuses)

Reboot.  Log back into the bad profile, counters2.dat will re-build itself.

Hi,

On my all Windows 10 machines, the downloading come from Edge are complete and fine, all of them have extension, as good as IE and Chrome. I have using Windows 10 and Edge for 2 years, never see a same scenario as you. When the download completes, can you run them?

And, you have found out a way to reset Edge, that’s good, after reset, what about downloading, can you open downloaded files?

Finally, you said that you are going to convert your whole company over to Google Chrome, no problem, your idea is feasible, beside Edge, I also use IE and Chrome, it’s wise to use different browsers on different situations. But one thing please note, IE and Edge can be managed easily by GPOs, Chrome seems to be a little hard.

Thanks for your supporting and understanding.

Regards

I can run the files if I add an extension to them.  For instance I downloaded some WebEx tools.  When Edge tries to run them after they are downloaded it prompts me to select an application to run them because there is not a file extension on the end of the file.  If I add .exe to the end, I can manually run the downloaded file.

I have not found a way to reset Edge, do you know of one?  I'm not sure why Edge isn't putting extensions on the downloaded files.  This just happened after I upgraded to the creators update and installed the latest security patches.

Thank you for your input.
