Can't add my current email as a new alias

Question

Sunday, December 27, 2015 7:49 PM

I want to change the primary email for my Microsoft Account.  The wrong email was used when my account was set up.  s  Instructions say to first add it as a secondary alias and then change it to primary.  However it will not let me add it as a new alias - says this email is already taken.  But it is my current email that I have used for 7 years.  Any help.

You cant use your primary email as an alias and of course it is taken it is your primary email.  To make it an alias you would have to delete it and wait 30 days then you could add it but you would lose all the current data and not be able to use it for at least 30 days.

Care to tell us more about the situation and what you are trying to do?

Hi StephGB,

To manage Microsoft Account Alias, we may refer to the following website:

Use aliases to add email addresses to your account

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/add-alias-account

Specially, check the change which alias is primary part.
