Question

Saturday, April 18, 2015 9:42 AM

Hello.

I have been struggling with this for weeks and week and have exhausted all options, even with the help of Corel support.

I have been trying to install Core VideoStudio X8 64bit but it keeps getting 1935 errors, this is generated when it tries to install MS Visual 2008 64bit.

Here is the error code:

Many thanks, I have run that Fix it several times sadly with no result.

Interestingly under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS I do not have \COMPONENTS???

Kind regards Mike (in the UK)

This seems to be a problem no body has the answer to!

Hello Mike,

The error is different, the above article is about the error "HRESULT: 0x8007054F" however your error is about "HRESULT: 0x80070003"

The error 0x80070003 means "The specific path couldn't be found.". I don't know which path is not available here from your error info, maybe you need to navigate to the folder: %temp% folder and find the error info from the log named "dd_vcredist_x64_20150324134808". Please upload the info from that logs to the forum so that we may be able to troubleshoot for you.

By the way, have you ever manually installed the X64 package by download from microsoft site?

Best regards,

Barry

Hi Barry.

Yes, I have been trying to install the MS Visual direct from MS to make sure it was not the software installer at fault.

I do not have the log named exactly the same as you put, I have two that appeared when the install failed.

These are: dd_vcredistUI7C9F and dd_vcredistMSI7C9F.

Links to both of these:

Log 1

log 2

Can I just add that I have also tried uninstalling all MS Visual C++ items with the intention of reinstalling all in order, however when I came to install 2005 I get the same error 1935 :( so had to use system restore to get back to where I am

Many thanks for your help

Kind regards Mike (in the UK)

Hello Mike,

Here is the error info:

Assembly Error (sxs): Please look into Component Based Servicing Log located at -144689992ndir\logs\cbs\cbs.log to get more diagnostic information.
MSI (s) (78:44) [08:27:11:473]: Product: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.30729.17 -- Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC90.ATL,version="9.0.30729.1",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="amd64",type="win32"'. “so had to use system restore to get back to where I am” I'm not so sure if the system restore point helps you install the VC++ 2008 package.

If you still have problem, try refer to the solutions list from here:

Hi Barry, many thanks my friend.

Do you know you are the only person across multiple forums that has even bothered to reply!

I looked at that long thread and boy oh boy is this complex.

I am shocked that such a common and old issue is still going on with out a better fix than reinstall Windows!

I was interested to read one users experience that starting verias services solved the issue for them.

Is there a list of services and status of them somewhere?

I am very much getting the problem still, however I seem to have 2008 installed now and can't get 2005 to install due to the same errors.

Looking at the CBS log I find:

Huge number of these:

2015-04-22 07:55:38, Info                  CBS    Warning: Unrecognized packageExtended attribute.

And this is not related to my trying to install anything but I wonder if it gives a clue to anything else going on?

Looking at the log again but this time when i try to install 2005 I see this:

I do have disc images dating back to December 2014 so if I knew what was missing or corrupt I might be able to restore it, trouble is I am way out of my depth here and don't know what to look for.

Hello, Mike.

When you run the .NET Framework Verification Tool, the first part of the tool log (as you provided) shows which .NET versions are installed on your system.

It is the last few lines of the log, however, that shows the result of running the test app for the .NET version you selected. When you look at the last part of the log, you'll see the test run with a return code. If the code is not 0, that indicates a problem with the selected .NET version.

From what Barry has told you, I don't believe your issue is with .NET Frameworks, but it doesn't hurt to check.

From the end of your verifier log:

[04/22/15,14:39:47] Launching process 'Netfx40TestApplication.exe' now
[04/22/15,14:39:47] Process successfully launched. Waiting 300 seconds for it to complete.
[04/22/15,14:39:47] Process 'Netfx40TestApplication.exe' exited with return code 0
[04/22/15,14:39:47] Verification succeeded for product .NET Framework 4.5.2

Looks like your .NET 4.x (4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 are in place updates to 4.0) is fine.

Thanks, so I can discount NET then, I was wondering if I needed NET1.1 to get 2005VS to install?

What gets me is that I can install the 32 bit version of the software not the 64bit yet I can't install 2005 VS which I thought was 32 bit as well.

Just wish I knew where this error was coming from.

Kind regards Mike (in the UK)

I was under the impression that you are trying to install a VC++ redistributable (from your first post "Product: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x64 9.0.30729.6161 -- Error 1935"), not Visual Studio. The VC++ redistributables do not use .NET at all.

Have I misunderstood?

Anyway, Visual Studio 2005 does not need .NET 1.1. It uses .NET 2.0, which you have.

Hi

Sorry, getting tied up in knots here.

Yes MS Visual C++, studio comes from the video application I was trying to install and the fact that there is a 2010 Visual Studio installed as per https://www.dropbox.com/s/61ppxbi8dsszokf/MSV1.jpg?dl=0

I have been trying to install vcredist_x86 the 2005 C++

Thanks

1935 errors that occur during the installation of Win32 assemblies such as the VC++ runtime files are caused by problems with the Windows component store, not the .NET Framework, so you can ignore any of the suggestions in this forum post that refer to the .NET Framework.

The CBS log that is listed above only contains information about uninstalling VC++ runtime files, so I think that may be capturing information from the roll back that happens after the VC++ redistributable fails to install.

Here are the steps that I typically recommend for 1935 errors that occur during the installation of Win32 assemblies:

  1. Install the latest Windows service pack and updates if you haven't yet.
  2. Try to run the System Update Readiness Tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821.
  3. Try to repair the files that are a part of your OS by using the steps listed at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/03/26/how-to-repair-the-net-framework-2-0-and-3-0-on-windows-vista.aspx.

If none of the above help, you might need to repair/re-install Windows to fix this type of error.  It might also help to post a question on a Windows forum (instead of this Visual Studio because the root cause of this type of problem is an issue with Windows itself, not an issue with Visual Studio) to see if someone there has any additional suggestions for you to try before you resort to re-installing Windows.

Hi Aron and many thanks for coming over to look at this for me.

OK on NET.Framework.

1) Updates all installed.

2) Readiness tool run and ok

3) **sfc /scannow run, no issues. **

I have posted in the windows forum with no replies sadly :(

The CBS log is odd I agree, it is as if it think 2005 is already installed and tried to uninstall it!

Is there any installation I could test it with?

Do these MSI logs tell us anything?

Tried clean boot and new user account to install 2005 as well.

The MSI log shows the same error that is listed above, but for a different assembly:

Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.ATL,type="win32",version="8.0.50727.42",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="x86"'. Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x80070003. assembly interface: IAssemblyCache, function: CreateAssemblyCacheItem, component: {97F81AF1-0E47-DC99-A01F-C8B3B9A1E18E}

I've seen some references to anti-virus and anti-malware software when searching for information about 1935 errors for VC runtime files with this HRESULT.  It might help to try to temporarily disable anti-virus / anti-malware, run setup again, then re-enable them.

Also, it looks like the specific file that it is unable to find is x86_Microsoft.VC80.ATL_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_6e805841.manifest.  You might want to also search your registry and file system to see if you have any references to that file that point to invalid locations.

Hi.

I found the file at: C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc80.atl_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_none_11ecb0ab9b2caf3c

Many refs in reg for x86_microsoft.vc80.atl but not for x86_Microsoft.VC80.ATL_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_6e805841.manifest

https://www.dropbox.com/s/xwgu0rd9b7i4bax/ATL80.dll.jpg?dl=0 odd that ATL80 is part of C++2005 when I can't get it to install???

If you're not getting any replies from the Windows forums, then I'm afraid I don't know what else to suggest other than to repair Windows at this point.

Hi Aaron

I have just re escalated it.

Even if a full repair was acceptable to me, I would not feel right about giving up.

There must be an issue that is causing the problem, and as such it should be possible to fix it.

My own limited thoughts on this are that there is some rouge registry error that makes installers think 2006 x64 is installed when it's not.

But as regmaid etc are gone I don't know what to look at.

There has to be a fix and I feel I must keep trying to help the many others out these with it.

What would the potentials be of fully removing all Visual C++ from the system and somehow cleaning up all traces of it?

Thanks

Mike

Thursday, June 25, 2015 7:20 PM

Some Visual C++ components are installed as a part of Windows, so it isn't possible to fully remove it.

As noted in earlier replies, error code 0x80070003 means that the system cannot find the path specified.  It is possible that there is a registry entry pointing at an invalid path and that could be the root cause of this error, but I would recommend that you try to gather more information to narrow the problem down before you try to clean up your registry.

You might be able to narrow down the exact path that is causing error code 0x80070003 by using a tool like Process Monitor from https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb896645.aspx.

Just ran that, hope I have done it right?

I'm sorry, but I don't have the bandwidth to look at your Process Monitor output.  In my previous reply, I meant for you to try to use the tool to narrow it down yourself. That tool reports a ton of data by default, so you'll want to set some filters so it will only report data that is relevant to your scenario.

Hi Aaron

Sorry, I have not used proc mon before, I have now filtered it only to show the issues with installer and reuploaded it as just over 1mb files size.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/hnfkmjsjtbcite9/Logfile2.zip?dl=0

The output means very little to me sadly so I can't conclude anything from it.

I looked in your log for entries where the value in the Result column was PATH NOT FOUND, and this is the entry that shows up:

12:31:47.4094849 PM msiexec.exe 1108 CreateFile C:\Windows\WinSxS\InstallTemp\20150625203147395.0 PATH NOT FOUND Desired Access: Read Data/List Directory, Synchronize, Dis, Options: Directory, Synchronous IO Non-Alert, Open Reparse Point, Attributes: N, ShareMode: Read, Write, AllocationSize: 0

Maybe there is a permissions problem on your PC that prevents the installer from creating subdirectories under C:\Windows\WinSxS\InstallTemp?  Can you try to manually create a folder under there and see if you get any errors?  You might need to reset the permissions on that folder to solve this issue.

aha!

Very interesting.

I can not make a file or folder there.

Trustedinstaller appears to have full permission but nothing else can write to it.

And I can't seem to change that!

You can take ownership of the folder, and once you do that, you should be able to update the folder's permissions.  You can find instructions for taking ownership of a folder in the documentation at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753659.aspx.

Saturday, June 27, 2015 7:09 AM

Morning Aaron

I find when I carry out that procedure that just after I take ownership and close the dialog boxes as instructed, a warning pops up saying there was an error and not all permissions have been granted and that doing this will cause all sorts of problems for my system etc.

I'll have another go using the hidden admin account and report back.

Many thanks

Would this not apply?

I have seen others with my 1935 error say they used this and it fixed the issue?

OK been digging in logs.

Hi

After finding the error access denied winsxs/installtemp I have now set the permissions to that folder so that for the moment everyone has full control.

I re ran the installer for Visual 2008 but again it failed.

You can see here the error message and the point it seemed to fail on.

On checking the log files I don’t see access denied anymore.

What I do see in dd_vcredistMSI75E8 is this:

MSI (s) (00:3C) [09:40:39:636]: File: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VC\msdia90.dll;   To be installed;              Won't patch;      No existing file

Hold the press it's fixed!!

It’s fixed!!!!

Here is how.

I ran Tweaking.com\Windows Repair (All in One)

Did the reparse repairs and then went to the main repair after backing up registry and making a restore point.

I then selected only the following repairs:

Reset Registry Permissions.

Reset file permissions (C: only)

Remove policies set by infections.

I ran this in safe mode, using msconfig as admin, boot/ minimal with network.

After this I verified I had permissions on winsxs and created the folder InstallTemp.C:\Windows\WinSxS\InstallTemp

I then installed Visual c++ 2005 first, then 2008 x86 and x64 versions.

It all worked

What I need to check now is that do I need to re set folder permissions in order to be safe from attack by viruses etc?

Very many thanks for your help with this, team effort for sure :)

Kind regards Mike (in the UK)

Great news! I'm glad to hear that you're finally able to install the VC++ redistributable.

For anyone reading this thread in the future, I think the only thing that needed to be done to resolve this issue was to reset the file/folder permissions for c:\windows\winsxs and sub-folders underneath that directory.

Hi Aaron

Many thanks indeed for sticking with me when many others had run out of ideas etc.

Yes I agree there, I am trying to establish what the permissions should be, some I have spoken with say that the winsxs/installTemp folder allows admin and system full control, however it no longer exists on my system and was presumably removed by one of the Visual installers?

Is there an easy way to reset permissions please?

Kind regards Mike (in the UK)

Monday, June 29, 2015 7:14 PM

On the computers I've looked at, the c:\windows\WinSxS\InstallTemp folder has the following security settings:

  • The built-in SYSTEM account has full control
  • The Administrators group has read/write permissions
  • The Users group has read-only permissions

The knowledge base article at http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/313222 contains instructions for resetting default Windows security settings.

HI

Interesting.

On mine when the problem existed only Trusted Installer had full control, everything else was read only.
