Can I use Visual Studio 2019 Professional in enterprise company?

Question

Wednesday, April 10, 2019 5:49 PM

We use an opensource IDE to develop in our company for development. The application is quite large and the IDE is very slow to debug in, so we use Visual Studio 2017 Express just to debug the application. The IDE is also becoming too slow as the project grows. I am tired of switching between applications, so I was considering to buy my own Visual Studio 2019 Professional standalone license (because I need plugin support, which is not available in Express versions) and use it to develop at work for the company. I cannot use Community version, because the company is too big.

Can I use Professional version in our company, or would I need Enterprise license? Or does the enterprise version just have some "extras" for enterprise companies and it is ok to use professional?

Is there full Visual Studio 2019 Professional standalone license I can read? I have been looking, but it is impossible to find it anywhere at the website.

Thank you.

Hi Jaroslav Šmíd,

Sorry for the reply delays.

All Visual Studio subscriptions and Visual Studio Professional are licensed on a per-user basis. Each licensed user may install and use the software on any number of devices to design, develop, test, and demonstrate their programs.

The licensed user can install and use the software on any number of devices**. The software can be installed and used on your devices at work, at home, at school, and even on devices at a customer’s office or on dedicated hardware hosted by a 3 rd party.**

Here is an example:

A developer with a Visual Studio subscription uses subscriber software at work during the day, but occasionally needs to develop at home as well, using a different computer. Under the Visual Studio subscription license, there is no difference between a PC at work and a home PC; the home PC is just another device on which the developer is entitled use the subscriber software. However, the restrictions for the subscriber software running on the developer’s home PC remain the same as in the work environment: the subscriber software installed on the home PC must only be used for design, development and testing purposes; and only other users with an appropriate Visual Studio subscription can use the software.

Please feel free to let me know if it unblocks to you.

Sincerely

May

Hi Jaroslav Šmíd,

Welcome to the MSDN forum.

You can buy a standalone license for professional version and here is pricing link of Visual studio: https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/pricing/ and compare the version option with more features and details please see : https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/pricing-details/ .

License Type

Subscription Benefits

Price

Standalone License

No

$499 (no renewal)

Standard Subscription

Yes

$1,199 ($799 renewal)

The MSDN subscriber benefits are automatically included when choosing the annual billing option. Since the annual price is basically the same as 12 monthly installments, choosing this option is very compelling, and likely will be the preferred purchase method adopted by organizations in the future.

One thing to note is that with the traditional pricing model, you only get the annual renewal option with the subscriber benefits**. That means if you go bare bones and buy the software standalone (an option for professional only), then you have to re-purchase it to upgrade to a newer version in the future.**

Here is MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS VISUAL STUDIO 2019: https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/license-terms/mlt031619/ and visual studio licensing whitepaper that included renew, upgrade info: https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Visual-Studio-Licensing-Whitepaper-October-2018.pdf

Hop these are helpful and please let me know if it unblocks you.

Sincerely

Thank you for your reply.

I have read the license and it says that I can only use the product on my own devices. Does this mean I cannot use it on a computer at work, because the computer belongs to the company?
