In case of fiewall block to access "do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com"

Question

Friday, September 21, 2018 2:52 AM

I understand windows10 clients try to access "do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com" for windows 10 update sequence.

And this is new scheme of Delivery Optimization.

My question is what will happen if the firewall blocks to access "do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com" ?

Windows update will fail, or continue in windows 7 update scheme ?

Delivery Optimization is actually a cloud service. A service runs on the local client and communicates with the cloud service at the following URLs, over ports 80 and 443:

https://geo-prod.do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com/geo

https://geover-prod.do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com/geoversion

So obviously it’s important to ensure these URLs are accessible through your firewall. It’s probably best to allow *.do.dsp.mp.microsoft.com to be on the safe side.

Kindly go through the following Microsoft article:

Hi,

The following endpoint is used for Windows Update downloads of apps and OS updates, including HTTP downloads or HTTP downloads blended with peers. If you turn off traffic for this endpoint, Windows Update downloads will not be managed, as critical metadata that is used to make downloads more resilient is blocked. Downloads may be impacted by corruption (resulting in re-downloads of full files). Additionally, downloads of the same update by multiple devices on the same local network will not use peer devices for bandwidth reduction.

Windows Update Delivery Optimization lets you get Windows updates and Microsoft Store apps from sources in addition to Microsoft, which not only helps when you have a limited or unreliable Internet connection, but can also help you reduce the amount of bandwidth needed to keep all of your organization's PCs up-to-date. If you have Delivery Optimization turned on, PCs on your network may send and receive updates and apps to other PCs on your local network, if you choose, or to PCs on the Internet. By default, PCs running Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Education will only use Delivery Optimization to get and receive updates for PCs and apps on your local network.

Hope it could be helpful.
