Excel 2013 frequently crashes on Windows 10

Question

Thursday, March 3, 2016 11:33 PM

Hello,

We have deployed Windows 10 for several of our users and they have been experiencing Excel issues (basically the application freezes and it must be restarted) constantly.

We have our Users on distinct hardware architectures (workstations, desktops and laptops with docking station) and the issue happens in all of them. Additional information below:

  • We already did all the basic troubleshoot steps (patches, repair Office installation, reinstall Office)
  • We have tried to copy files locally and the issue persisted
  • Processors varies from latest models of Intel Core i5 and i7 with minimum 8GB of RAM and SSD Drives
  • It happens when users have multiple Excel files open (we've observed 5-8 instances of Excel)
  • We are running Microsoft Office Standard 2013 on Windows 10 Pro

Has anyone faced this issue?
Is there anything else we could try to resolve this problem?

Thank you very much!

Hi,

If Excel works fine in safe mode, this means maybe there is any add-ins cause Excel crash behavior.

You also need to check the XLSTART folder, if this folder contain any files. If it did, please try to remove these files and reopen Excel file. (Don't forget backup these files.)

The path for XLSTART folder: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART (I'm using Windows 10.)

Any updates please let me know and I'm glad to help you.

Hi Conny,

As a quick way to fix, I suggest you try to repair your Office program in your environment.

For Office, please refer to this support article and follow this method to repair Office program:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Repair-an-Office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b

As your environment is Windows 10, did you use IE browser or Edge browser?

If your environment is IE browser, I suggest you reset your Internet Options.

You can refer to this KB article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/923737

For Edge browser, please provide more information as my knowledge for Edge browser is limited.

Thanks for you understanding.

Hi,

Based on your description, your issue is random.

Did you get any error messages when Excel crashed?

Which version of Excel 2013 and Windows System are you using? 32-bit or 64-bit?

Did your Excel files contain any formulas or Macro codes?

I suggest you try to open Excel files in safe mode, if it works fine please try to disable any add-ins.

You can also try to collect event log when Excel crash, then provide the event log here. We can get more information from your event log.

Any updates please let me know and I'm glad to help and follow up your reply.

Hi Emi,

Thanks for your answer. We are running Office 2013 32 bits on a Windows 10 64 bit environment. The excel files are light and simple; no macros or external links, just data and pivot tables.

We got one of the users to start Excel in safe mode, I haven't collected any feedback so far, I'll confirm with him later.

With regards to add-ins, the users facing this issue have different add-ins, like Laserfiche and Adobe Acrobat DC, but we have disabled most, except Acrobat for 1 user (the other users didn't have it).

I'll collect more data today and add to this post.

In time, in case safe mode fixes the issue, what can we do on a permanent basis, I mean, is there a way to know what was cousing the issue and get it fixed so Excel can be run in normal mode?

Once again, thank you so much for your response.

Morning.

Being a newby, I am a little blind. :)

I too am having similar issues for the last week or so, Excel crashes after opening, sometimes before I am able to open a file, sometimes after a few minutes.

I have used this combination since I upgraded from Windows 8.1 last year with no issues.  I reinstalled Windows 10 in December after other issues where Start button would not work.  Again it had worked perfectly.

There were some Win 10 updates a week or so ago that may be of issue?  Maybe i need to role back the Windows updates?  If so, how do i do this?

I am running Office 2013 (64 bit) on Windows 10 (64 bit).  I have checked the XLSTART folder and no files.

I have started in Safe Mode - no difference.

In desperation, I reinstalled Office 2010 (32 bit), and the same issues prevail.

I am a ta loss, any assistance appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Hargstan,

I remembered that recently there are 3 updates cause Excel or Word slow to use, even crash.

Please try to check if your environment also installed these Updates:

KB 3114736

KB 3114717

KB 3114734

If you did, try to uninstall these updates.

Interesting.

I installed Windows 10 yesterday on my home HP desktop. I have a home business doing client work so use Excel both on the OneDrive cloud and with files saved on my computer. In three hours, Excel crashed three times - eliminating any work I did that was not saved. I think this happened whenever I went to open a new tab on the internet (even when I was not using the cloud). Very frustrating as I had to reinput all data 3 times and save the file to my system, reuploading later.

Any quick and easy fixes (not that computer savvy)?
Do you think it is related to opening a new internet tab?

Thanks - I hope I can get used to this new program quickly!

Conny

If you cannot  uninstall the updates listed below, roll back your Win 10 build,   see   https://www.howtogeek.com/235474/how-to-roll-back-builds-and-uninstall-updates-on-windows-10/
