Can't save Word document to OneDrive

Question

Wednesday, April 10, 2019 1:47 AM

I hope someone can help because I haven't seen this before.

There's a user at my work who can't save a Word document to his OneDrive.

He just received a new laptop. His data on the old laptop was saved to his OneDrive and it synced on the new laptop. He created a new Word document today and he's trying to save it to a folder in OneDrive. The location is several folders deep and it gives him a message that there's a problem with the file name. He reduced the name down to a single word and it still gives the same error. I tried saving the his document to "OneDrive\Documents" and it saved there but won't go in the folder he's trying to put it in. I even created a test Word doc, called test, and tried to save it to the folder he's trying to go to and it still give a message that there's a problem with the file name.

The funny thing is that Publisher saved a file with the same name to that folder he's trying to use. I also created a test document with notepad and that saved fine. It's just the Word doc that won't save.

I don't know what else to look at or what to tell the guy.

Hi Chris,

What version of Word and OneDrive are you using? Please update them to latest version to have a check. Does the issue only occur with this specific folder?

As far as I know, the entire path, including the file name, must contain fewer than 400 characters for OneDrive, OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online. If you exceed that limit, you'll receive an error message.

Please try to create a new Windows user account to log in the computer, try to log in OneDrive with other user account and save Word files to OneDrive. Will it work properly?

In addition, please open Word, click File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Trusted Locations. Add the OneDrive folder path to have a check.

You can also visit OneDrive online, try to upload a Word document to the location. Will it be successful?

If you have any updates, feel free to post back to let us know.

Best Regards,

Herb
