Windows DHCP server with Cisco Switch VLans

Question

Wednesday, July 30, 2014 7:42 PM

I added a VLan to our Cisco switch with a different ISP and DHCP, but for some reason my Windows DHCP is overriding into that subnet, how would I stop it from doing this? Thanks in advance.

Hi ESpade,

If you have multi vlan, you must configure your switch forward the DHCP request to your Windows DHCP server or specific them to request your Cisco DHCP server. On your Windows DHCP server you must create the superscope to offer the IP address. You can refer the following similar third party thread to do that action.

DHCP is a pretty simple-minded process. The client broadcasts a DHCP discover message on the network and a DHCP server will reply with an offer. If you have two DHCP servers available on the same segment, the client will accept the first offer it receives.

I think you need to do a bit more reading on how your switch handles VLANs and how clients in the VLAN should get their network config.
