There is not enough memory to complete this operation, Word 2010, 2016 Windows 10.

Question

Hi all,

I normally don't post questions on support forums because I can find the answers most of the time. Unfortunately this one has me scratching my head. As the title states we are receiving the error message "there is not enough memory to complete this operation" when trying to open some Word documents on Windows 10 Pro 1803 computers. They are domain joined computers and have the same GPO policies applied to them as all of the rest of the domain computers. However, only 5 out of 8 computers within a single department are receiving this error. The 5 computers are running Windows 10 1803, the other 3 are still on Windows 7.

So far we have tried the follow with no luck or change in the error:

Converted files from 93-2007 to Word (ie from .doc to docx)

Replaced fonts directory with fonts from install.wim

Re-installed Office 2010 and 2016 on affected machines

Renamed/deleted normal.dom if it existed

Renamed/deleted building blocks directory

Ran DISM tool as well as SFC scan, on all machines, no corruption detected or repairs performed.

Checked for and installed updates, only one machine had Office updates that did not change the error message.

Deleted Office registry keys

Removed printers, reinstalled with updated drivers.

Checked permissions and security settings, everything appears normal.

Ran Word in safe mode with no change.

Disabled add-ons, which most machines did not have any add-ons.

We will be performing an in-place upgrade on one of the machines this evening and will post results from that. Hope to hear something from the community that may be useful.

Thank you for any and all assistance you may offer.

Winnie,

Thank you for your response. I had completely forgot to try compatibility mode in my other attempts. However after trying several options it did not have a change in the error message.

I did update one of the computers to the latest 1809 build but the error changed from the one state in the subject to requested font cannot be displayed.

Out of curiousity, and because I seen it suggested during my research, I loaded one of the documents on a working machine, change the font to Arial and saved it. This allowed me to open the document on the problem machines without any error messages. I was also able to convert the document to the new .docx format.

The customer is working on changing the fonts in all their faulty documents.

Hi,

It seems that you can tried many suggestions. I notice that the issue only happens to 5 users who are using Windows 10 1803 for Office 2016. No issue in Windows 7 with Office 2016. Please try the following points:

  1. Please check if the Office 2016 version is same on Windows 10 and Windows 7. To check the Office version, open Word 2016, go to File > Account > About Word.
  2. Update Windows 10 to the latest version.
  3. Run as Administrator to open Word app: search Word app in Windows, right-click it and select Run as Administrator to start it. Then open documents from File > Open to check if there is any error.
  4. Set Word to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode: Search Word in Windows, right-click it to select Open File Location, right-click Word, select Properties, under Compatibility tab, select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 7.

Best Regards,
Winnie Liang
