The workbook is currently open by 256 users

Question

Hi All,

We are using SharePoint 2010 and Excel 2010 and we have .xlsm file in SharePoint document library. When users try to open the document, they get the following message.

"The workbook is currently open by 256 users. A maximum of 256 users can have a shared workbook open at the same time.
The workbook will be opened read-only. You can try again later when one or more users have closed the workbook."

I downloaded a copy of document to my desktop and renamed it but still I am getting the same error. Can anyone please help me on this.

Thanks,

Cherry

Your file could be corrupted. Try to save it on your desktop. Open it and "Save as" with different name and try again.

Other possibility:

"According to the error message, it seems some other are editing the current file now. Can you check for this?  A workaround about this is saving the file to local and then upload it to server to replace the older on in sever.http://www.sharepointhelp.com.br/Exibe.aspx?id=35

I suggest to select the “Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited” in the version settings for the document library. So that, only the checked out user can edit the documents."

We were getting this error on spreadsheet on a network drive, using Excel 2016. We solved it by opening the file in Excel 2010, then saving the file again.
