Cannot install MS Office Professional 2016

Question

Saturday, March 17, 2018 12:01 AM

I just completed a clean install of Build 17115 and started installing applications. MS Office Professional 2016 install quit with a rather terse error "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 encountered an error during setup".

I found a number of proposed solutions and I think I tried them all:

Ran the MS Fix app to completely remove all traces of Office 2016

Removed Office from both Task Scheduler and Registry

Frustratingly, I still get the error message.

This program was running fine on this build before I did the clean reinstall

Hi,

If your storage (HDD or SSD) has enough free space and your computer is connected to the Internet,
please add a new user (local account) with administrator privilege and sign in with the new user, and try to install Office 2016.

Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately, after I created the new local administrative account, the install failed in exactly the same way.

This is very strange - I am trying to install a legal copy of a modern MS program on MS Windows 10 and it repeatedly fails with no attempt at explanation. I would hope that Microsoft would address this problem.

I need these apps installed for my work.

Hi,

What are you using for installing MS-Office, a DVD media, .iso file,  or .exe file?

Hi,

I guess you downloaded the ISO file and it is corrupted.
Please download it again and try to install it.

Excuse me for my ignorance, but how do I download the iso without paying for a license again?

Will it recognize my machine digital license

Hi kgash,

I don't know how you get the ISO file, and guess you downloaded it. So, I suggested to download it again.

Downloading an ISO file does not require a license. A license or activation will be required after you install Office 2016.

Can this get to the answer?

I was able to download an .iso file and it installed correctly. Unfortunately I cannot  activate it because the product code that I have applies only to files obtained from Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center where my organization obtained the file. I will have to arrange for another copy to be downloaded from that organization and reinstall that.

At least I now know that the problem that started this thread was in fact caused by a corrupted .iso file.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi kgash,

Can I understand you have installed Office 2016 and activated it successfully?
If so, Congratulations !!

Hi Ashidacchi,

Alas, all is not well. I had downloaded a copy of Microsoft Office Professional 2016 from Microsoft and it installed fine but I could not activate it. The reason given is that my Activation Code was for files obtained from Microsoft Volume Licensing Service. So I deleted Office from my computer and downloaded a new copy of the Office 2016 .iso file from Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center.

When I tried to install this .iso, it failed and gave the same error as I have been getting all along.

I'm beginning to think that the problem might stem for the fact that I am using Windows 10 Insider edition, Build 17115. I seriously need the programs in Office, especially Access, for my work.

Do you or others in the forum have any additional suggestions how I can work around this install problem? Is there some other group I can contact?

Hi Ken,

I'm not sure if I can understand correctly your situation (especially MS Volume License).

But it can be said the issue is not related with Insider Preview of W10. I have several Windows 10 Insider Preview in virtual machines (for testing of my software). I did install Office Pro Plus 2016 in one of them without any trouble, and could activate it.

I suggest to consult IT staff in your company. They should know about the ISO file you downloaded and about how to activate with Enterprise License.

Hi Ken,

Is there any error code in the error message you get?

>>So I deleted Office from my computer and downloaded a new copy of the Office 2016 .iso file from Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center.

Please make sure you have downloaded the correct .iso file from VLSC. You can confirm this with your IT guy.

Besides, please also try to follow the instructions in the following article to collect Office installation log files so that we can further look into it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-sg/help/826511/how-to-use-a-setup-log-to-troubleshoot-setup-problems-in-office

You can send the log files to us via GBSD TN Office Information Collection [email protected]. (Please include the URL of current thread in the message so that we can easily identify your message)

I am sure I downloaded the correct file (SW_DVD5_Office_Professional_Plus_2016_64Bit_English_MLF_X20-42432.ISO) and I did not get any error code when the install crashed.

I work with a very small charitable organization and unfortunately, I am the IT guy!

I did a complete deletion of the attempted install of Office 2016 and ran the install again - with the same error.

I then looked for the Log files in Users/kgash/AppData/Local/Temp and found none. Thinking it was the wrong place, I ran a search program looking for files similar to Microsoft Office Setup(####)_Task(0001).tst, etc and found no files like that.

I appreciate the opportunity to run some diagnostics to find the cause of this problem.

Thanks for your response.

I'm wondering how you could get "the same error" though you did not get any error code.

I'm a kind of IT guy (software developer self-employed) and would like to say this:
even if you choose the correct file (ISO file) to download, file corruption may occur. If you want to check if a downloaded file is not corrupted, you need to use checksum by some tools. Checksum is a long string, it is provided by an owner of the download file and looks like "120EA8A25E5D487BF68B5F7096440019".

If he/she does not provide checksum, we can check if a downloaded file is not corrupted. It depends on his/her idea.

We can know checksum of a downloaded file by a tool (called checksum calculator) and check if it is the same as a checksum which is provided by an file owner.

Please refer to the following article, if you have free time:

Apparently Microsoft Volume Licensing Service does not provide checksums for its downloads (MS Technet does provide them). They do recommend that we use their Download Manager which is supposed to check the integrity of the downloaded file - so I downloaded another copy of the .iso file using this method. Still will not install!

Well I just tried something I should have done days ago.

I installed Office 2016 on my laptop (Windows 10 Home 1709, 64bit) and the install went perfectly.

Therefore the .iso file is not corrupt and as far as I can tell, the only factor left is the difference in build. Install works on standard Windows 10 1709 and does not work on Windows 10 Insider Build 17115.
