Question
Friday, October 17, 2014 10:33 PM
I have set up a virtual network with two virtual machines. The first VM is Server 2008 R2 and is set up as a domain controller. The second VM is Server 2012 R2, and has been joined to the domain. The DC (TestVM1) is also set up as a DNS server. From TestVM2 (Server 2012 R2), I am able to log in using a domain login, and I am able to browse to a public website.
I was able to run Windows Updates from TestVM1, but when I attempt to run Windows Updates from TestVM2, it fails.
The Windows Update client shows "Error(s) found:" and "Code 8024402F".
Errors in WindowsUpdate.log include

Hi,
In most cases, the above errors are caused by small interruptions in communications between the computer to be updated and the update to be downloaded. These issues usually resolve themselves. Before you try the troubleshooting the error codes, try one or both of the following.
Exit Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then restart Windows Update to check for updates.
Turn on Windows Automatic Update so that updates are installed automatically every 24 hours.
If that fails, please try the following :
1. Click on Start, and then click Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type "net stop wuauserv" without the quotes at the command prompt, and press
Enter.
4. Delete (or put in recycle bin) the contents of
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (but not the SoftwareDistribution folder)
5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
6. Now try Windows Update again.
Regards,
Mekh.

No Joy.
Tried to run Windows update and it failed again in the same manner. (Log showed it had also failed at about 4:30 AM EST)
Stopped the service, deleted the files, started the service, ran Windows Update, got the same failure.
Monday, October 20, 2014 12:41 PM
Again tried steps Mekh suggested. No joy.

Hi,
Have you configured anything on the TESTVM2?
The error code 0x8024402F usually occurs when there is connection issues with the Internet.
Verify you are connected to internet.
Make sure that Windows Firewall is turned on.
Disable all third-party firewalls [if any] temporarily.
Regards,
Mekh.
Tuesday, October 21, 2014 9:51 PM
I can open IE on TESTVM2 and connect to the internet.
Windows Firewall is turned on.
There are no 3rd party firewalls.
I have done very little to the VM since installing it.
1) I added Process Explorer
2) I added some shortcuts (Command Prompt, Notepad, Process Explorer) to the desktop
Windows Update continues to fail. Last attempt was at 5:46 PM EDT.
Wednesday, October 22, 2014 4:51 AM
Hi,
I would recommend you to spin up another testvm and join it to the DC and check if you can run the updates.
If the updates go through, you can delete the TESTVM2.
Regards,
Mekh.

Just spun up another VM. Used image "a699494373c04fc0bc8f2bb1389d6106__Windows-Server-2012-R2-201409.01-en.us-127GB.vhd" (as I did previously). Verified that I can connect to a web site on the internet with IE.
This time tried to run Windows Update before joining the VM to the local domain. No joy.
WU succeeded in getting a cab file from:
But failed connecting to https://fe2.update.microsoft.com/v6/ClientWebService/client.asmx
The web server fe2 is running a local cert for the web site.
Tried stopping wuauserv, deleting the contents of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution and restarting wuauserv. Still no joy.

Hi,
I created a Testvm using the same image and the updates are going through. So, I am trying to involve someone familiar with this topic to further look at this issue.
Regards,
Mekh.

Hi,
Could you please let me know the VM size and the region?

I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time. Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed that as a test and got the same error message. I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up. No joy as well. My logs are below:

I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time. Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed that as a test and got the same error message. I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up. No joy as well. This is a VM server running on ESXi 5.1. Server 2008 servers dont seem to have an issue. Server 2012 server don't seem to have an issue. Only this new Server 2012 R2 server. My logs are below:

My VMs continue to show [AGENT_DETECTION_FAILED] or [AU_UNABLE_TO_CONNECT] in the ReportingEvents.log file in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
and errors in WindowsUpdate.log in C:\Windows
This has been going on since I created the first Server 2012 RC VM on October 16th. (more than 2 weeks ago)
Though I have an MSDN subscription and have available support incidents on that subscription, and have tried getting through maze of online support submission screens multiple times, I get to a page that says:
These contracts cannot be used with Azure Virtual Machine –
Windows
I called Microsoft Azure support to attempt to straighten things out and after a long time on hold was instructed to leave a message.
Left the message (more than 10 days ago now) and got a call back from someone who is apparently a contractor to Microsoft in Azure presales. They've been sympathetic, but have not had any suggestions that provided useful information.

Hi BGood26,
Can you please try the below steps ?
Method 1: Remove characters from the proxy exception list, and then clear the proxy cache
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options .
Note If the menu is not available in the Internet Explorer window, press the ALT key on the keyboard to display the menu.
3. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings , and then click Advanced .
4. Delete any entries in the Exceptions section, and then click OK .
5. Close Internet Explorer.
6. Click Start Start button , and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
7. In the search results list, right-click Cmd.exe , and then click Run as Administrator .
User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue .
8. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command. • netsh winhttp reset proxy
• net stop wuauserv
• net start wuauserv
9. Try to install the updates again.
Method 2: Enable the "Automatically detect settings" option in Internet Explorer
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options .
Note If the Tools menu is unavailable in Internet Explorer, press the ALT key to display the menu.
3. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings .
4. Click to select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK .
5. Try to install updates again.
Also, can you check if you have the same issue if it is a Standard_A1 VM ?
Regards,
Mekh.

Hi,
Any updates on the above issues?

Mekh.

In regard to your question about updates,
Nothing fully satisfactory. I was finally able to connect with Azure support, and at their urging, made another try at installed ADFS on the server that is connected to the domain (VM2) before attempting to resolve the Windows Update issues.
That install (on Friday 10/31) worked, and at about the same time (or perhaps as a side effect of installing ADFS?), Windows Updates started working on VM2, and continues to work. (Though I didn't realize Windows Updates started working till several days later when I went back to do more with ADFS.)
Windows updates on VM3 have been failing through till as recently as 3:21 AM EST today.
I'll try your suggestion in when I can make some time in the next few days.

same problem here on the VM Server 2012 R2 (domain controller) other 2012 R2 servers report to WSUS and get updates without any issues.
# WARNING: Failed to find updates with error code 80040154
WARNING: Failed to get Wu Exemption info from NLM, assuming not exempt, error = 0x80240037
Edit: I was able to correct the problem using the fix suggested here.

I had a similar problem and tried several solutions. Strangely, when I changed the settings to download but not install the updates automatically it fixed the problem.
This may have been a permissions issue, or updating the settings may have cleared the error and fixed something in the background.

Hi,
In most cases, the above errors are caused by small interruptions in communications between the computer to be updated and the update to be downloaded.
Enter.
4. Delete (or put in recycle bin) the contents of
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (but not the SoftwareDistribution folder)5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
6. Now try Windows Update again.Regards,
Mekh.
Thank you! Solved my problem.

Great info here. I had the same issue on a H-V VM. Using 2012R2 Standard. AFter about 2 hours of trying stuff from Google, I was able to resolve as follows (first update had 87 updates / 435MB).
1. Disabled UAC (slider all the way down) as Administrator
2. Turned off Firewall (all of it)
3. Stopped Windows Update and Windows Module Installer services.
4. Cleaned up Windows\SoftwareDistribution folde
5. Set Windows Update to "Never check for updates"
Then ran "Check for updates" and after 3-4 minutes, voila. Pure Joy.

I know this is an old post, but this might help someone else having the issue.
I had same issue as OP:

Thanks! That thread finally fixed it for me after trying everything else.
