I've attached a physical disk on a hyper-v guest with success. The guest boots, but there is no disk visible in Windows. Does anyone have a clue, why not?
'diskpart', 'list disk' command, does not show the disk, but it is attached on the guest:

Hi Allan,
Could you please check execute a Re Scan from Disk Management and see if that makes any difference.

Hi,
I've tried 'rescan disks' on virtual guest many times. There's no difference.

Hi
Can you please try to add in another SCSI controller and then add it?

Bala

Hi,
I already added a second SCSI controller (see the screenshot, disk no. 2 is a second disk - not physical).

Hi Allan,
Just to confirm, it looks like that screenshot is from VM settings.
Does the disc appear in disk management of Hypervisor (Hyper-V Host)? if yes, what is status?

Chetan

Hi,
Yes, the disk is taken offline in hyper-v host to be able to add it in the virtual guest. Here is the disk seen from hyper-v host:

How is the disk physically connected to the host? If it is either HBA or iSCSI, you should be using that capability to connect to the physical disk.

Hi Tim,
It's an old Fusion IO PCI disk (SX300).

Hi,
Can this disk take online and appear to use on this host? If there's data on it, please note to backup.
Please check the host and VM up to date, also with integration services for the VM.
Please also check if this disk's driver is correct or need to update.
Best regards,
Michael

Hi,
Did you go through the logs in the eventviewer?
Eventviewer --> Applications & Services --> Microsoft --> Windows -->Hyper-V SynthStor
Possibly you may get some clue under that

I guess what really should be done, is to attach the PCI/NVMe storage directly to the VM by using this:
/en-us/windows-server/virtualization/hyper-v/deploy/deploying-storage-devices-using-dda
It's just not possible since the hardware manufacturer does not supply any information (error reported back by PowerShell when trying to attach the PCI to the VM).

"I'm running Windows Server 2019 Datacenter."
Is the hardware supported to run on 2019? www.windowsservercatalog.com
If you can't find the hardware listed for 2019, you are pretty much on your own. Just because the system 'runs' does not mean that all components are interacting properly with the operating system.

I'm quite sure that it's not supported. I'm not able to find SX300 IBM/Lenovo/Fusion IO PCI cards on the list.

Hi,
Try to update the firmware and the latest drivers for the components. It may help. It might be using the default compatible drivers that come with the OS. So update and give a try

Bala

That could be the issue. As I said, without it being supported, you are pretty much on your own. You could try contacting the vendor to see if they did any work to get it supported. Generally if they do not support it, it means there was not a market for it, or it did not pass certification tests,

Hi,
I wanted to do this, but it seems the latest firmware and drivers are from 2014/2015! :-| ... I'm not able to find any newer.

Hi,
Can you get the vendor support?
If the hardware or firmware doesn't supported in newer OS, you'd better to replace it by a new drive device.
Highly appreciate your effort and time. If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Michael

Hi Michael,
Lenovo has created a case and has escalated it to get a response whether there is a newer firmware and driver or not. I'm currently waiting for Lenovo to get back to me on this.

Hi,
It will probably a few weeks or months before this is solved. A 'core' case at Lenovo is created by my account manager to get support for Windows Server 2019 for this product.

I seriously doubt that Lenovo will develop support for the product. Most vendors make product decisions based on market demand. It appears that with this product, they decided a few years ago that it was no longer in demand in the market. You may be able to present them with a business case, but for a single user, it is highly unlikely.
Why not replace the old device with a new device?

"I won't replace it right now because of the price"
Obviously, that is your business decision to make. If your company can wait weeks or months for a possible answer of 'no', that's fine. However, if you need to put a solution in place before then, you will need to find an alternate solution.
