Azure VM - WindowsAzure Folder Size keeps on increasing (Free up Space)

Question

Thursday, July 11, 2019 5:54 AM

Hi,

WindowsAzure Folder size is around 16 GB & keeps on increasing. The two highly consuming folders within are; 'ÇollectGuestLogsTemp' & 'Logs'.

So, in order to free up the space can we go ahead & delete the old logs, will deleting the logs cause certain adverse impact on the VM.

Regards,
Gaurav N.

Hello Gaurav,

Thanks for posting your question here.

I have recreated the issue, I have deleted the old log files under both the folders you mentioned ('CollectGuestLogsTemp' & 'Logs'). Under Logs folder not all the files are getting deleted.

I have restarted the VM after deleting few old logs and the VM is up and running without any issue.

Below are few suggestions:

  • Perform the Logs clean-up on a test VM.
  • Ensure you take a backup of the VM before you perform the Logs deletion.

Thanks.

Hi Vikas,

Thanks for the prompt response. We'll test the same on a test VM & will observe the VM's functionality accordingly.

However, the WindowsAzure folder will again increase in the size over the time & we can't delete logs everytime as we may need it for analysis. So, is expanding the VM's respective O.S. disk the only option to resolve this issue & keep log files.

Gaurav N.

Hello Gaurav,

Thanks for your response.

As you have mentioned that you need the logs for analysis, you can consider the below recommendations:

  • Increase the OS disk size and you can zip older logs (by date criteria) and move them to blob storage to free-up the disk size.
  • You can also explore on using some custom script that can automatically zip and move the logs to blob in a automated way.

Thanks.

Hi Vikas,

Thanks for your reply.

As suggested by you, we'll look into the process of uploading the old logs to the blob storage via Storage Explorer. Further, we'll see if we can implement any automation for the same.
