Has anybody had any luck disabling the "first things first" updates window when first launching an app in office 2013 sp1, Lync client in particular. None of the reg edits, group policy, or settings in OCT disable that particular screen.

Hi,
I'm not sure what exact steps you have tried, but you might want to take a look at this blog post and see if it helps.
How to manage the Opt-in or First things first prompt when Microsoft Office 2013 applications are first launched: http://blogs.technet.com/b/odsupport/archive/2012/11/13/how-to-manage-the-opt_2d00_in-or-first-things-first-prompt-when-microsoft-office-2013-applications-are-first-launched.aspx
More reference, related registry entries are:
Machine setting
- Root : HKEY_Local_Machine
- Type: DWORD
- Key: Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\General
- Name: ShownFirstRunOptin
- Value: 0×00000001
User Setting
- Root : HKEY_Current_User
- Type: DWORD
- Key: Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\General
- Name: ShownFirstRunOptin
- Value: 1
Hope it helps.

It's recommended to download and install Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT), which is developed by Microsoft Support teams. Once the tool is installed, you can run it at any time to scan for hundreds of known issues in Office programs.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, what you are suggesting along with the link you supplied do not work. The link you supplied has a picture of the screen that I'm trying to eliminate. I've tried the OCT corrections along with the registry settings. These corrections to disable the Office splash screen and options but it does not disable the "First things first" screen.

You might need to make sure if you have above registry added successfully.

Hello,
I have just tested it on my own test machine. I have successfully disabled the "First things first" screen by adding below registry entry:
User Setting
- Root : HKEY_Current_User
- Type: DWORD
- Key: Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\General
- Name: ShownFirstRunOptin
- Value: 1
I also tried the OCT approach, exactly followed the steps in above link, it also works for my Office 2013 installation.
Could you please try this workaround again or let me know how exactly you did it before?
Before you launch any Office application, please check if you have this specific registry key added successfully.

Thank you for your help. The path under HK_LM, Key: Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\General,
does not exist. The path under HK_User, Key: Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\General, does exist and the value for, Name: ShownFirstRunOptin, is properly set to 1. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not, but the OS we currently have deployed is Windows 7 enterprise, the version of Office 2013 sp1 we are attempting to deploy through SCCM 2012 is a volume licensed product.

Try to create that registry entry manually, restart Office and see if it works.
