Windows 10 not listening on port 1723

Question

Thursday, November 1, 2018 3:43 PM

I can't get my win10 computer to listen on port 1723 anymore (according to netstat -a). I tried various tips I found: disabling 'quick startup', restarting or even manually starting the 'routing and remote access' service. Nothing.

Up till some time ago I had a fully functioning VPN server (only using windows software). Then, out of the blue, the connection started behaving very strangely: I could make a connection, could see the remote client appear on the server. No errors. BUT, I couldn't do anything useful with the connection anymore. Copuldn't even ping anything on the remote network.
After trying everything I could think of (or could find) I decided to start afresh with my vpn server. I started by re-installing the pptp miniport. This had the immediate effect of the computer not listening on port 1723 anymore. I removed the incoming connection and made a new one, but that didn't help. I then tried the tips I described above. Still nothing (according to netstat).

Any tips? Or should I whipe the disk and reinstall windows?

Hi,

Do you mean that you reinstall the the VPN server? Did it work fine?

What about the firewall?

Any error message in Event Viewer?

Looking in the logs was a good tip. After a re-boot, it tells me:
"Remote Access Connection Manager failed to start because the Protocol engine [IKEv2] failed to initialize." The odd thing is that, when looking in 'services',  Rasman seems to work just fine! Yet I suspect the error has got something to do with my problem. But how to tackle it?

With 'start afresh' I meant only what I described: deleting the WAN miniport pptp; deleting the incoming connection. I did this because vpn - although a connection was established - didn't function anymore.
Now I can't get the system to listen on port 1723 at all. Thanks for the link, but I'd tried all that already. The firewall, as I understand it, is not relevant here.

Hans

I'm sorry to say your tip wasn't helpful as this service was on 'manual' to start with. I only temporarily put it on 'automatic' to see if that would help. It didn't, but it provided a possibly revealing error message.
I would VERY MUCH appreciate help to get my computer listening on port 1723!!

Yes, probably updated; the computer is on 'automatic updates' as far as Windows is concerned.
I absolutely did nothing else, though!

Hi,

Have you tried restarting Windows? Will the 1723 port come back?

This problem has not been solved.

Do you use a router over Internet?

If you’re connecting to your new VPN server over the Internet, you’ll need to set up port forwarding so that your router knows to send traffic of that type to the right PC.
