Can a cname be created to point a name to an external host?

I would like to point 365.ourDomain.com to outlook.office365.com . Is it possible to create a cname in our internal and external DNS?  Thank you!

You should never use a CNAME record for your root domain name.(i.e. example.com).

The CNAME record creates an alias for a single name and not its subdomains.

For example, say you have several subdomains, like www.mydomain.com, ftp.mydomain.com, mail.mydomain.com etc and you want these sub domains to point to your main domain name mydomain.com.

Hi,

It's not a subdomain.  I want to create a cname, "365", in our forward zone for domain ourDomain.com to point to host outlook.office365.com .  "365" is not a subdomain, it would just be a name\host within our domain.  So, when browsing to 365.ourDomain.com you will get directed to outlook.office365.com .  We of course don't own office365.com.  We have a split DNS, so I want to create the Cname in our internal and public DNS.  I'm just not sure if you can create a Cname to point to an external domain we don't own, and I have no way to test right now.
