When a user selects to insert an existing file and use an icon to link to it the standard icons are not automatically selected as they were in previous versions of office. Below is what the user sees.
I understand that the user can browse and search to the exe file for each icon set, but that's a bit much for the common user and it should simply work regardless.
Any thoughts on how to set it so that the file extension icon is selected by default?

Hi,
I've tested and I cannot reproduce this issue.
Does this issue happen to all types of linked file or just a certain file type?
Please first try removing the file cache with the icons to see if it helps. To do this, please follow:
1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Browse to C:\Users\username%\AppData\Local
3. Select the file IconCache.db, and press DELETE on your keyboard. When you are prompted, click Yes. Close all processes and restart the computer.
Note: IconCache.db is a hidden file, you need to enable the Show hidden files, folders, and drives check-box to make it visible.
If the problem persists after you remove the cache file, please also try restoring file associations to see if it helps. For detailed steps, you may have a look at this KB article:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2422299
Hope this helps.

I have exactly the same issue and I've found that it happens when I try to embed an object that is on a OneDrive directory. If you copy the file you are trying to embed to a directory that is not synced to OneDrive it embeds fine with the correct icon.

I have the same problem. It only affects OneDrive. I am in particular using OneDrive for Office. Ie part of Office365.

I get the same issue, copy to local none synchronised folder and it works? If I search for the application exe and manually apply it works OK but not ideal and time consuming. Did you ever find a fix?
