Question

I have searched all over online for a resolution for this issue. After a client of mine enables preview pane she receives an error every time she tries to open a word document from file explorer. The error states "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable."
This is a brand new computer with new install of windows 10 pro. x64
I have rebuilt the users domain profile, repaired office 365 both quick and full repairs, re-installed office, reinstalled office with the 32 bit version, ran sfc /scannow, checked the HKEY_Current_user\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\usershell folders and verified the path is correct for the INeCache, and installed updates both to office and windows. Nothing seems to resolve the issue. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

It has taken me weeks of revisiting this issue to find a solution buried deep on a page.
Preview pane does not work with 32 bit office.
Open regedit.
browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\
Backup the CLSID
Delete keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\00020827-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\65235197-874B-4A07-BDC5-E65EA825B718}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\84F66100-FF7C-4fb4-B0C0-02CD7FB668FE}
Reboot.
Test.

Hi,
Try to resolve this issue, create a new folder on your computer.
1.Start Windows Explorer
2.Locate the folder location C:\Users\userprofile>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
3.Create the folder labeled INetCacheContent.Word.
Note: It may be necessary to turn on Hidden Items in the View Ribbon of Windows Explorer.
Then follow the steps below to clean IE files.
•Open Internet Explorer and go to the gearwheel.
•Open Internet Options now.
•Under the General tab you see a box with Browsing History.
Click on the Settings.
•Increase the Disk space to use to 1gb.
•Click OK.

Hi,
Thank you for your update.
What's your system version?
Type "winver" in Search Bar to check. Then try to check for update if the system has been updated to the latest version.

I apologize for the delay on this. It turns out reinstalling office 365 with the 64 bit version resolved this issue. Which is odd because I have did that several times.

I am also experiencing this issue and have tried and failed to resolve this issue for one of my business clients. It seems that as soon as I set up a new Windows 10 version 1903 computer for them replacing their old Windows 7 computer, they consistently get this error with the preview pane with their Office365 version of Word.
I have been hoping for a windows or office update that would fix this issue, but it has been many months, and my clients are getting frustrated as they are used to using the preview pane, and it is a "pain" for them to not use it.
I have tried many different fixes to no avail. I cannot install the 64bit version of Office365 as they use a program called Workshare that relies on the 32bit version.

Oh my god! After spending literally 3 hours with this stupid problem, this solution finally worked for me!! Thanks so much!
I just hope the deletion of the 3 keys doesn't affect sth else. Kept the backed up file just in case.
(My office is x86)
Thank you!!

This issue has been bugging our department for weeks, removing these reg keys worked a treat and resolved the preview issue, so thank you JS36688 :)

Deleting those registry keys mentioned by JS36688 has finally fixed this problem, which has been driving me nuts for about nine months! I have no idea where JS36688 has found the solution, but now after a so many months, Microsoft has documented the problem here:
/en-us/office/troubleshoot/error-messages/no-file-previews-file-explorer-switching-to-32-bit
Of course, finally documenting a problem after people have been suffering for almost a year is the most we can expect from Microsoft: Actually FIXING the problem in the source code would affect the bottom line too much.
I have spent months researching this (without success), the problem is when you search for this error you only find generic regurgitated garbage like from the first response here which doesn't help at all. The only solution I had so far was disabling the preview pane, and I always wondered why this was affecting a few computers but not most (the Microsoft page explains when it happens: if you install Office 64bit, uninstall Office 64bit and then install Office 32bit).

Sadly, this did not work in my case. None of the strings noted above were found on in my registry and I still get the same error message. I even created a new folder INetCacheContent.Word -- and that didn't help either.
Frankly, I don't know what to do next except live with it. Interestingly, I never had this problem on my old PC. This only happened when I built my new PC and purchased a new copy of MS Office 2019. BTW, I checked and I was running a 32-bit version on my old PC.

Make sure that you are not searching in regedit under ".CLSID" string (NOTE the DOT in front of CLSID!)

As already stated but worth repeating: Thanks!! Only working solution!
