xp computer in same workgroup not appearing

Question

Monday, March 12, 2018 5:58 AM

This was working before but stopped. My XP computer assigned to the same workgroup as my Win 10 machine does not appear on the network; however the Win 10 machine does appear on the XP machine and I can access the C drive. How do I get the Win 10 machine to recognize the XP machine??

Windows XP did only support SMB V1, which is for security reasons disabled in new Windows 10 versions.
You will need to enable the feature "SMB 1.0/CIFS Client"

I hope your XP machines are not connected to the internet.

SMBv1 is not installed by default in Windows 10 1709, but XP system still use this protocol, you need to enable SMBv1 from Windows Features.

But I need to remind a point, SMBv1 isn’t safe, isn’t modern or efficient. The original SMB1 protocol is nearly 30 years old, and like much of the software made in the 80’s, it was designed for a world that no longer exists.

Thanks for the advice. I actually bought a service contract from HP for the computers involved, and they remotely fixed the problem. I think that is what they did.

Cannot tell you how grateful I am that you posted this solution. Have have spent way too many hours trying to solve this problem myself and search the web.  Once I made the above change and rebooted my XP desktop popped right up. I only have one question why did you day "I hope your XP machines are not connected to the internet."

Thank you very much!
