Send To Mail Recipient not showing as Type "Mail Service"

Question

Recently encountered problem with Send To Mail Recipient. The "Mail Recipient" does not show in the drop down.  I researched all the Send To posts on how to recreate the Mail Recipient item in the "Send To" folder.  So now when you look in "C:\Users\carme\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo" there is a file entitled "Mail recipient.MAPINIMail".  There is no "Envelope" icon in front if it as is normally seen, instead it's the "Notepad" icon. File type is reported as "MAPIMAIL File (.MAPIMAIL) but on my other PC's this file is recognized as type "Mail Service"? I have Outlook 2016 installed and set as default email.

So does Outlook open when you click Send to > Mail recipient? Is the problem in Outlook?

I don't believe so.  I ran repair on Outlook 2016, no joy.  Seems to be a Win 10 issue because I don't see "Mail Recipient" in the "Send To" drop down.  Other posts suggested deleting and then re-creating "Mail recipient.MAPINIMail"  Did that, used notepad, removed extension and added "Mail" inside file".   I see the other usual Send To items, like FAX, Document, etc. but "Mail Recipient" is missing.  Inspection of "C:\Users\carme\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo" shows "Mail recipient.MAPINIMail".  Win 10 is not recognizing "Mail recipient.MAPINIMail", if it did it would add  Mail Recipient, with a valid Envelop Icon to the Send To folder.

What size is you Mail Recipient.MAPIMail? Mine 4 Bytes and contains the test Mail.

Is a Mail program linked to the mail protocol? Start > Settings > Apps, then Default apps, scroll to the bottom on right and Choose default applications by protocol. Scroll that down to Mail is that listed.

Also go back a screen, at the bottom of Default apps Choose defaults by program. Scroll down to .mailmapi is that showing and listed to Outlook?

Thanks for your help thus far!

Confirmed - Size is 4 bytes and contains Mail.

Confirmed - I choose default applications by protocol and "Mail was listed.

Checked Default, looked in Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Programs > Set Associations and Mail was associated with "Notepad".  Tried to associate .mapimail with "Outlook" as you suggested, received an error, Win 10 would not allow me to change it.

I looked on my Win 7 PC (mail works fine) for .mapimail association and it points to "Mail Service".  Also under "Current Default" it showed "Unknown application".

We're getting closer, I think we need to know how Win 10 sets up this association.

Can you change the Choose defaults by program via Setting in Windows 10?

Start > Settings > Apps, then Default apps, scroll to the bottom on right and Choose defaults by program.

I would like to include a jpeg pic for you too see but the Forum will not let me do that at this time.  So Choose Defaults by program for "Mail", there are (1) Extension ".eml", and (3) Protocols "Mail to", MS-UNISTORE-EMAIL, and OUTLOOKMAIL

It still bothers me that "Mail recipient.MAPIMail" is still not associated with "Mail Service". More specifically the file type .MAPIMAIL which is incorrectly associated with NOTEPAD.  If I try  to change association, I am only given two choices Notepad or Look for App in the Store.  I realized at this point Mail Service is a valid "program" that's why it's not listed.  Something else has to make the association.

I have just had the same issue as a result of following a thread that corrupted the Mail Recipient file in the Send To shell. The File Type association changes from Mail Service to MAPIMail File and the envelope icon is no longer associated with the file type. After reading a lot of threads this was a simple fix that worked:

https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/432679-changing-default-program-for-mapimail-file-no-send-to-mail-recipient-option

When it runs it says it failed but everything works after running the file.
