Possible to force a DHCP failover to Hot-Standby server when State Switchover is set?

Question

Friday, May 5, 2017 4:49 PM

I have a 2012R2 domain/servers and setting up a single DHCP server to backup about 15 different servers.  From reading through the documentation, I am planning on configuring that server with Max Client Lead Time of 30 minutes and State Switchover Interval of 30 minutes.  I am thinking that if a DHCP server goes down for windows updates etc, it really should be back online in 30 minutes, and an hour of downtime for DHCP also seems like a good number.

My concern is that if I do catch the alerts of the primary DHCP server crashing and I want to force a failover, instead of waiting an hour.  Is there an easy way I can force that fail-over to the existing backup scopes, without having to wait an hour?

Also, for testing everything can I just stop the DHCP service on the primary and wait an hour?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi,

Getting to the Partner Down state is accomplished in one of two ways—either manually by an administrator when he or she realizes that the active server is no longer there, or automatically after the period of time configured by the Auto State Switchover Interval.

So you may need to set a short MCLT,such as 5mins,and manually get it to Partner Down Mode.

I suggest you to test from communication interrupted, such as disable the NIC on DHCP server or pull out the cable.

How do I manually get it to a Partner Down mode?  I have my Host Standby set at 30 minutes MCLT & 30 minutes for Auto State Switch over, but I found out 5 minutes ago that my primary DHCP server is completely dead at a remote site.  How can I speed up the failover instead of telling the business to wait for another 55 minutes?

Thanks,

Dave

On the failover tab, select Edit and select change to partner down:

Thanks Cartman.  I am not getting that option and guessing it is because State Switchover is configured.  So my guess is that if you do have State switchover set to take care of everything if you are on vacation or something, that will also remove you power to force a faster failover if ever needed.
