Export Visio to PDF and preserve layers?

Question

Saturday, May 13, 2017 7:53 AM

Hi,

I'm using Visio 2016 Professional and have files with a number with layers in them.
I can save and/or export the files as PDF but the visibility of the layers cannot then be turned on/off in Adobe Acrobat.

Is there a way this can be done?

Thanks

Hi Declan,

Do you mean the Visio layers are not visible in exported PDF file?

In Visio 2016 side, please go to HOME tab, in the Editing group, click Layers > Layer Properties. Make sure all layers is Visible, Print, and Active.

Winnie Liang

Hi Winnie,

No, the layers are visible in Adobe Acrobat but there is no option to turn off the visibility for individual layers.
I have a PDF that was created in Autocad and the visibility of individual layers can be turned on/off within Adobe Acrobat. I was hoping there was an option to export Visio's to allow this to be done also?

I have requested my account to be verified so as to post an image of the PDF as an example.

Thanks

Regards
Declan

Hi Declan,

Sorry for my delay.

Yes, I installed the Adobe Acrobat and was able to reproduce your issue. The layers configured in Visio were unable to switch in Adobe. And all layers were displayed in the drawing.

It seems to be a compatibility issue between Visio 2016 and Adobe. If you are unable to share pictures in the forum, please try to upload the screenshot in OneDrive and share the link here for more information.

Hello,

Do you have a solution for this now?

I am a bit disappointed as Visio says clearly that layers are preserved when exported to PDF, but this is actually not the case anymore...

I need a solution for an important trial within 14 days; hope you can help!

Visio with acrobat plug in will do this.  My visio from corporate has this integrated.  It is the tab at the top next to developer labled "Acrobat".

Will prompt you to either flatten all layers or preserve them.

Warning.  a 45 page data center visio with 15 layers takes over 60 minutes to convert, and don't do it over wireless unless all your data is local.
