Question

Hi,
I'm not sure if this is by design of SCCM 2012, but if I set up a package for deployment as "Required" with a deadline and also check off the "Allow users to run program independently of assignments" checkbox, if the deadline passes a client cannot install the software OUTSIDE maintenance windows (i.e 9am-5pm). They can only install the package manually in advance of the deadline, after which it says on "waiting to install" until a maintenance window is available.
Now of course if I check the "software installation" box under the "User Experience" tab, that overrides the maintenance windows and installs the software. The only problem is, is that it does it automatically. This is a problem for packages that shut down other applications to install the software (for example shutting down Internet Explorer to install another app) as we don't want applications shutting down when a user comes in at 9 AM or being prompted to reboot their machine.
So basically what I want to know is, is it possible to allow a client to run a package from Software Center themselves after a deadline has passed without either setting it to an "Available" advertisement or checking off that "software installation" box and have the software install automatically? I was able to have clients install software at any time past deadlines manually in SCCM 2007 (with "Run Advertised Programs"). Thanks in advance!

Wat you've described above sounds like a possible bug. If you can reproduce this, you should open a support case and report it.

I can't say I have been in this situation before but the wording on the behavior seems specific: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682178.aspx
From that page (I underlined relevant parts):
Required - The package and program is deployed automatically, according to the configured schedule. However, a user can track the package and program deployment status and install it before the deadline by using Software Center.
Allow users to run the program independently of assignments – If enabled, users can install this software from the application catalogue regardless of any scheduled installation time.
Then again, it could be very well be a bug, I'm just commenting on the actual wording in the docs.

Sorry, re-reading my post I had some incorrect description.
Clients can't install manually OUTSIDE maintenance windows (meaning during the business day) through Software Center, even though "allow users to run program independently" is checked. Like I said, if there's a deadline and it has passed, the software will say on "waiting to install" until it reaches the maintenance window.
But if the deadline hasn't passed, a client CAN install early via Software Center. I'll edit the main post to be more accurate.

Yep, that's how I read your OP. Still sounds like a bug or design oversight to me and you should open a case with Microsoft support.
