Running AD, DNS, File and Storage Services on the server. Not sure why the Maps Broker service keeps dying.
Can I just turn it off?

Okay, found it. It does show in the Services MMC if you use the right name - Downloaded Maps Manager. Looks like something from Windows 10. Description is:
Windows service for application access to downloaded maps. This service is started on-demand by application accessing downloaded maps. Disabling this service will prevent apps from accessing maps.
What do you mean when you say it is dying? Is it trying to automatically start or are you trying to start it manually? The reason I ask is that I look at my event log and do not see anything related to it.

Thanks for finding it in Services MMC. It is set up as delayed start. Get notification in Server Manager dashboard of it not running. Don't have a use for it on this server. Just disabled it.

What is the 'Maps Broker' service? I can't find anything like this on my DC or on another system that is running storage services. Maybe it is called something else?

Don't know. It shows up in the Service Manager Dashboard. Could not find it in Services MMC.
This is a google search result - http://servicedefaults.com/10/mapsbroker/

Hi Gautam_Das,
Just disabled it if you don't need to use.
When you want to use you could enabled it manually.
And I have checked it, found out no components relays on this service.
Best regards,

To be honest, there is absolutely no way this service should be included in Server 2016. Not unless you work for Microsoft Bing division and need to deploy thousands of "map" servers... Otherwise, this is a glaring hole/unnecessary feature.
This is a Windows 10 app enablement service. As a "client" I may actually need this, especially since Cortana asks me every other day or so to verify my "Location" ... I "ass"ume this service relates to Cortana using an algorithm to calculate based on your geographical/IP address location.
I am assuming, for 99.9% of business out there, there is zero need nor desire from a Sys Ad perspective to have this service even existing. But for clarity I dont "KNOW" that for a fact.
MICROSOFT, if you're listening. You need to send this to the product dev team's and tell them to remove this as a default installed service, and perhaps instead include it in the "User Experience" available, additional "Features" you can add later.

Has anyone got a list of services that we can disable (I don't want Microsoft Wallet on a Hyper-V host)

I second this, hard. Minimal Shell mode should return and never go away for servers. I can hardly imagine the case of a SERVER OS being installed on a regular PC for a daily usage, so desktop-specific features should either be added on demand instead of being random bloatware on a SERVER OS (don't even start on Desktop Experience and Remote Desktop Services as a whole...) or be removed entirely. Honestly, using the exact same codebase for desktop AND server OSes in such a bizarre way is so wrong, I don't even know where to begin. I don't want to see red blobs all over Server Manager window right out of the box due to some purely desktop-specific services randomly spazzing out.

I created a VM with Windows Server 2016 on Azure and I keep having this service start Error.
So I just disabled the "download map" service.
As Richard, I really don't see the point of having this service being installed by default on Windows Server 2016, especially on Azure where the geo localisation is from the Azure data center, so completely irrelevant for the standard use.

Let me throw one more reason out there not to enable the Maps service: It will conflict with McAfee antivirus and crash your PC with a hard blue screen. McAfee admits this:
https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB86990
Sadly, I have no choice but to use McAfee on my corporate laptop and I can't upgrade to the version mentioned in the KB that supposedly "fixes" the issue. Also, if you google for similar issues regarding the HcThe.dll file from McAfee Intrusion Detection you will probably come across a post by Malwarebytes where they talk about McAfee not properly dealing with OS hooks and crashing. They've written code to try to deal with it in their own product because the two apps conflict with each other due to McAfee's poor programming.

you could disable it with the GPO. Who needs such service on a Server OS?

We'll mark a solution as answered when we get a solution that actually fixes a problem. That would require the person with a possible solution to have reading comprehension and understand what the problem is. I've seen too many answers to other people's questions that has nothing to do with the issue at hand.
