Question

So I can reproduce this 100% of the time. I add myself to a shared mailbox in exchange. Close and reopen outlook and get outlook to download the mailbox. Wait 10 minutes till everything is downloaded. Then i search for anything really in quotes "gdgfdghghfhd" for instance, and i get a random set of results, none of which have my string in it.
same thing happens with or without quotes. cannot reproduce if i attach to another users mailbox, only shared mailboxes and only when the search scope is set to "current folder".
Other times, i can search for an email address in quotes and it will find parts of the email address. Like if its a .ca address, it will find peoples names like carolina, and highlight the CA in those names or really anywhere in the message. It will find all domains ending in .ca for instance.
What am i missing here? I can reproduce on multiple office 2016 workstations.

Turning off cached mode for shared folders has solved this issue for the most part.
File tab -> Account Settings -> Double-click the account name -> More Settings -> Advanced tab -> Clear the check mark from download shared folders.
To do it domain wide follow this article
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/982697
or In the Group Policy Object Editor or the Group Policy Management Console, under User Configuration*, expand* Administrative Templates*, expand your version of* Microsoft Outlook*, expand* Outlook Options*, and then click the* Delegates node. Then set "disable shared mail folder caching" to enabled.
But wait thats not all! i thought it wasn't working because it didn't clear the checkbox, turns out you need two GPO edits to achieve this:
User Configuration
Administrative Templates
Microsoft Outlook 2013/Account Settings/Exchange/Cached Exchange Mode
Download shared non-mail folders: Disabled
Both must be set. Each one individually does not do the job. Result:
Still not sure if its a bug or not but this work around seems to work for me and my users.

Hi,
Thanks for your feedback and the workaround sharing.
I tested in my Outlook 2016 (version 16.0.6741.2017) with Exchange 2013 and I was unable to reproduce your issue with "Use Cached Exchange Mode" and "Download shared folders" checked. What's your Outlook version and Exchange version in your environment? If possible, please share the detailed mailbox information about your scenario and I would do further test and research for your issue.
I did the test in the following scenario, please confirm if it is the same background environment as your:
1. The user 13test1 has full access mailbox permission to 13shared1 in Exchange server 2013.
2. 13shared1 is opened automatically in 13testi mailbox with AutoMapping feature in Outlook 2016.
3. Using Cached Exchange Mode and Download shared folders in Outlook 2016.
4. Do the mailbox searching with keywords in Inbox folder of shared mailbox (13shared1, not 13test1).
Then the issue occurred in your scenario, is it right? If I misunderstood, please feel free to point it out. What I find is that, when I do quick searching for the shared mailbox 13shared1, the search scope is All mailboxes by default:
If I type "gg" in search field, the items in other mailboxes are also shown in the search results. It is the expected behavior. If you are interested in this issue, please share your scenario here and we can discussion about it :)
Regards,

In step 4, you need to select "current folder" as opposed to all mailboxes. And yes it does seem to be more of an issue if you have lots of mail in the folder, not just one or two mails. I cant reproduce when the shared mailbox has not many mails. I think when you select "all mailboxes" the user just doesn't find the mails from the shared mailboxes and thats why they are using "current folder", but i dont want to get too far off track.
And if you are getting the italicized text, i believe it is not caching, it is reading directly from the server i think. Caching should be on for the mailbox and also shared folders to reproduce. All mailboxes that are cached are also configured to download ALL mails.
Took me a few minutes to find the outlook version, its buried under "office accounts" for some reason. version is 16.0.4312.1000 32 bit and yes we are using exchange 2013. Not sure why i dont have the latest outlook patch as i just ran windows 10's "update check" and it said that there were no new updates. WSUS is configured to download office updates automatically, but i see your version is higher than mine.
We were thinking it had something to do with the local machine search not working correctly as apparently it uses local search when things are cached and exchange server when its not cached. However i can replicate the problem on two windows 10 machines and 1 windows 7 machine so i doubt its a specific machine problem, per se.
And of course, the normal mailbox for the user works fine.
I no longer have a system to reproduce the problem as i am fixing it with group policy now. I am pretty happy with this resolution as i havent noticed any adverse effects so far and the users are happy. I understand your wanting to get to the bottom of it so i will help if i can. shame you cant reproduce yet...

For anyone else finding this thread after suffering the same issues, this was fixed in https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3114972

Problem persists even with the update suggested above.
Cache mode searches don't work for shared mailboxes. When they are not cached search works as expected.
