Adding links to the 'Shared Folders' folder in Server 2012r2

Question

Saturday, January 5, 2019 11:25 AM

Hi Guys

I created a couple of folders for users after the Server sent out the 'Shared Folders' link to users who join the domain.

Id like to add shortcuts to that 'Shared Folders' folder on the server so the show up in a central place for the users so they don't have to surf to the file server.

As the Administrator I tried to copy a shortcut into the \FileServer\Shared Folders folder but was denied as I didn't have permission, how can I add these shortcuts please?

Regards

Jerry

Hi and thank you for your replies.

However, none really did what I wanted. I have since discovered a way to do the what I wanted.

I make shortcut icons for the folders I wanted to add to the Shared Folders folder on the server desktop.

I found the server path to the Shared Folders folder which was in C:\DFSRoots\Shared Folders

I moved the shortcuts from the desktop to this folder and Voila shared folders in the right place and the users can see them too :)

Happy Days

So thank you for your ideas and it is resolved now :)

Hello Jerry,

Here is the Step by step procedure to add shortcuts to that 'Shared Folders' folder on the server

/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/cc753580(v=ws.11)

To create a new Shortcut preference item

  1. Open the Group Policy Management Console . Right-click the Group Policy object (GPO) that should contain the new preference item, and then click Edit .
  2. In the console tree under Computer Configuration or User Configuration , expand the Preferences folder, and then expand the Windows Settings folder.
  3. Right-click the Shortcuts node, point to New , and select Shortcut .
  4. In the New Shortcut Properties dialog box, select an Action for Group Policy to perform. (For more information, see "Actions" in this topic.)
  5. Enter shortcut settings for Group Policy to configure or remove. (For more information, see "Shortcut settings" in this topic.)
  6. Click the Common tab, configure any options, and then type your comments in the Description box. (For more information, see Configure Common Options.)
  7. Click OK . The new preference item appears in the details pane.

Click OK.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

For this scenario, we should verify the current NTFS permission and share permission.

To publish shorts for all users, we can try Thuyavan’s suggestion or use Files Extension to copy shortcuts files to specific folder.

For your reference:

If you have anything unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Best Regards,

Hi Thank You for the input

I'm having trouble understanding where these instructions relate to the 'Shared Folders' This seems to apply a shortcut generically to a place you define.

When I look for 'Shared Folders' in the lists available in the dialogue for this I cant see it, is there a specific place or option for that?

Regards

Jerry

Hi,

Yes, Shortcuts extension is used for creating shortcuts to specific path. It also could achieve your needs – create some shortcuts to shared folder. If you want to use this method, you can follow the following steps:

  1. Create a new GPO, linked to Domain level or OU level which the file server belongs.
  2. Modify Security Filtering setting, add the file server to the list and remove “Authenticated Users”.
  3. Edit the GPO, native to Shortcuts under Computer Configuration – Preferences – Windows Settings.
  4. Create shortcut preference and notice the following parameters:
    • Name: Input the shared folder path and shortcut name (For example, we should input D:\shared folder\shortcuts\shortcut name, instead of \File Server\shortcuts\shortcut name).
    • Location: Keep the default setting <Specify full path>.
  5. Filling the required information, then continue to create next shortcut.
  6. Run command Gpupdate /force on file server and we can see the shortcuts will be creating.

If the shortcuts create failed, we can collect Group policy result to verify the failed reason and starting troubleshooting

Best Regards,

William
