Not sure if this is a bug or some setting I just dont understand but I cannot get the claims to windows token service from manage services to show as started. When I click start I get this error in the event viewer:
An attempt to start/stop instance of service Claims to Windows Token Service on server <SERVERNAME> did not succeed.
Re-run the action via UI or command line on the specified server. Additional information is below.
c2wts (DOMAIN\sp_farm)
I have searched and searched for an answer. This thread http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010setup/thread/6b865ead-970b-4460-9dcf-1cc6d6d8530b talks about needing a connection to the internet, but my server is connected to the internet so i think i can rule that out. Also I have read that c2wts depends on the crypto service. I have run this command with no success:
sc config c2wts depend= cryptsvc
I can start the c2wts service through services.msc and it is succesful. But central administration still shows it is stopped. I have also re-run the installer in repair mode, and re-run the initial configuration wizard, maintaining all of the same settings as the previous installation. That didn't help. Basically, I'm out of ideas and I cant find much about this on the web. Any ideas?

This looks like it may be a problem with a service account or account credentials. Can you check the following:
1.) In Central Administration go to the Security section then the configure service accounts link:
Which account is used for the farm account? Is it correct and in domain\account format?
Which account is used for the C2WTS service (still in Central Admin)? It should be Local System.
2.) Open services.msc. What service account is listed for the C2WTS service here? Does it match the account you see inCentral Administration? It should also be Local System.
If the above check out, what I would try first is to re-enter the managed service account password for SP_Farm in Central Administration. This can be found within the security section=>configure managed accounts. Then I would restart services or I might even reboot the server to ensure that any services using hat account are restarted using correct credentials.
If none of this resolves then I recommend:
1.) In Central Administration/Monitoring, turn up SharePoint logging to verbose in all categories, wait a minute then reproduce the problem. Wait about a minute then turn the logging back to what it was.
2.) On the server where you were starting the C2WTS service, open the SharePoint logfile (like the one you posted earlier), and find some logs at the time you reproduced the problem and relevant to the problem. All of the entries in the log file that are relevant to the problem will share a correlationID (this correlationID will also appear in the error that appears in Central Administration when you attempt to start service). Can you post just those filtered events that appear close to the time of the error? (don't need all that match the correlation ID, just those right around the time and relevant to the error). To filter by correlationID, you can use Excel or I like to use ULSViewer (http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/ULSViewer).
If you change any information in the logs for privacy, please indicate that you've done so.

Hi,
most likely you can find more information in the logfiles of SharePoint itself. I've found out that the Event Viewer isn't showing the information you need or the exact information you would like to know. Check the logfiles of SharePoint and probably you find the information you'll need.
Could you also paste the information so that we can take a look at it.

I apologize for the late response. For some reason the alerts I set up are not arriving at my inbox.
I did not have the chance to check the solutions you offered Fred, In the time that has passed since my last post I had already reinstalled sharepoint 2010 on a fresh server install. I did not see the same problem after reinstalling.

I found that uninstalling/reinstalling KB.974405 [Description of Windows Identity Foundation], helped fix this issue once.
