W2012 R2 - Pro Plus 2019 and Cloud 365

Question

Thursday, October 4, 2018 12:00 PM

Hello,

Following the release of Office 2019 and its lifecycle, I have a worry.

  1. Office 2019 can run on Windows 10 and Windows 2016 only.

  2. In October 2020, a 2019 version of Office is required to use Cloud 365 services (including Exchange Online)

I installed a 2012 R2 server last year (for compatibility reasons, 2016 was not an option), including a RDS VM with users using Pro Plus to connect to Exchange Online.

What will happen in October 2020 ?

  • Office Pro Plus will install the 2019 version on the 2012 R2 server (and allow access to Exchange Online)?
  • Office Pro Plus will stay in 2016 (and users will no longer have access to email)?

Could someone help to clarify this subject please ?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I would like to know what detailed version of Office Pro Plus installed on the 2012 R2 server, click-to-run version of Office 365 ProPlus or volume licensed Office Professional Plus 2016.

Currently, there is no official documents indicates whether Office 365 ProPlus with Office 2019 version is supported on Windows server 2012 R2. Based on the System requirements for Office document, Office 365 plans for business, education, and government supports on Windows server 2012 R2. But Office 2019 is listed to be supported on Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019.

Additionally, I notice in this article, it indicates:

What happens if I’m on Windows 7?

Office 2019 is not supported on Windows 7. For Office 365 subscribers*, you can continue using Office on Windows 7 until January 2020. OneNote 2016 will continue to be supported until October 2020 for mainstream support and October 2025 for extended support, long after support for the Windows 7 operating system ends. *

Therefore, personal opinion, you can continue using Office 365 subscription product on Windows server 2012 R2 until 2020. During this years, you can also consider to upgrade Windows server 2012 R2 to Windows server 2019 and upgrade Office 2016 version of Office 365 ProPlus to Office 2019 version of Office 365 ProPlus.

Best Regards,
Winnie Liang

Hello,

Thanks for the answser.

It it is the click-to-run version of Office 365 Pro Plus.

This version of Office works fine at the moment.

But what will happen in the future ?

This version of Office will probably still be able to run on W2012 R2.

But will we still able to connect to Exchange Online with this licence running on W2012 R2 from October 2020 ?

Upgrade of the server is currently not an option.
It has been purchased and installed 1 year ago, it will still run as-is during 4 years.

I am not quite sure about the Office plan and Windows server plan in the future. Based on my experience, Office 365 ProPlus generally supports more Windows platform than Office 2019. And the following link can search for the Microsoft Product lifecycle:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/search/13615

If you have more concern about the future plan of supported OS for Office 2019 and Office 365 ProPlus, it is recommended to directly call or contact Microsoft for more information.

If you have any technical issue about Office products, welcome to Office forum for more discussion :)

Hi,

Unfortunately, the answer is still unclear :

"I am not quite sure about the Office plan and Windows server plan in the future."

And the Microsoft Product lifecycle (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/search/13615) does not help to answer this question.

About the lifecycle for Windows server 2012 R2, the Mainstream Support End Date is 10/9/2018. It is recommended to upgrade to higher version for using.

About the future plan for Office product, please understand this forum is for technical support and discussion for Office product. Maybe you can directly contact Microsoft to make some confirmation about it. If you have any feature suggestion on new product, we can also submit feedback to Office product team via the following method:

Hello,

I found some recent information about this topic :

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4462769/updates-to-office-365-system-requirements

It is mentioned « Effective January 14, 2020, ProPlus will no longer be supported on the following versions of Windows and Windows Server. ».

What does «  will no longer be supported » mean in Microsoft language ?

Does it mean that Office ProPlus will stop running on W2012 R2 ?

@Winnie Liang

I know it not yet a technical issue.

But, if it becomes a technical issue on 14 January 2020, my customers won't be able to work anymore.

It will be not a technical issue, but a technical disaster...

I prefer to anticipate such situation.
