Question

I saved a couple of Excel (Office 2002 Pro) spreadsheets on an external HD before erasing my computer's HD and reinstalling Windows 10. After opening the computer and connecting the external HD to migrate all the saved files and folders, I was unable to open the password-protected Excel files. In fact, no pop up window appeared after double-clicking the document's icon, allowing me to input the (known) password that would open the file. I've tried moving the file from the external drive on to my Desktop then attempting to open but the same result occurs, with the warning: "Excel cannot access ...... (name of file). The document may be read-only or encrypted".
Does anyone have a suggestion for how to open this file using my known password (that worked to open the file before I reinstalled Windows 10)?
Thanks!

Right clicking on a file and selecting Properties does not result in any such Security lock warning. I think my files and backup folders' contents are lost forever, following my System Reset. I think the issue is that I never unlocked the folder containing all of these items before saving them to an external HD, then resetting my computer including deleting all files and folders. I simply moved the entire locked folder icon over to my ext. HD, released and let it "load". Rather than loading all of the files and folders within that locked folder, it merely loaded the "images" of those files and folders--their names, the program used to create them, etc. But each document had a padlock icon showing on its icon, and when I attempted to open the document, I was met with the pop up that "this..........file cannot be opened, and may be read-only or encrypted". NOTHING I did could open the document. The reason was simple: its contents were not there. Only its icon.

Hi,
If you change a Windows System did the file will be opened by the password?
I faced a problem recently, if the password contained a colon and numbers.
When I try to enter the colon ":", the caps lock must be on.
This is strange behavior in Excel, I'm not sure if other kind of password also faced this problem.
I suggest you try to keep the caps lock on when try to enter symbols.
Any updates please let me know and I'm glad to help you.

My password was simple: six lower case letters. It worked fine when opening the Excel document prior to resetting my PC.
My issue is that there is NO POPUP TEXT BOX to insert a password now. When I double click the Excel document, I see only this: Excel cannot access ".............xls (the name of my file). The document may be read-only or encrypted"

Hi,
Did you mean when you open the file in Windows it opened as a blank screen without popup a dialog box to type password?
I suggest you try to right click the file and select properties, please confirm if the file is blocked.

Please check unblock option and reopen the file.

If the data source is lost and you only copy the shortcut, we can do nothing. :(
