Question

Hi! We're configuring a new 2012 server with File and Storage Services. The number of permissions options is confusing me. I do understand that permissions to the file system and to the file share(s) are two different things. This is where I'm confused:
I've created and shared a folder. I right click on the folder and choose Properties. I then click the sharing tab. There are two buttons here. One of them says "Share". If I click that, it says it's shared to Administrator and my user name. If I click the other button, "Advanced Sharing" and then "Permissions", it's shared for "Everyone".
Which one is it? Why are there two different permissions for folder sharing and which takes precedence?
Thanks!

Hi,
>>If the above is true, then why are there completely different sharing settings under each? If I add "Everyone" to the "Share" button, why doesn't "Everyone" show up under Advanced Sharing?
Before going further, both Share and Advanced Sharing can share a folder.
Based on my test, if we use Share button, after we share a folder, Everyone should be automatically assigned Full Control share permission of the folder. We can check this by click Advance Sharing, and then click Permissions. Besides, if we use Share button, and if we assign Read permission to a user, the user will be automatically assigned Read, Read & Execute, and List folder contents NTFS permissions of the folder ; if we assign Read/Write permission to a user, the user will be automatically assigned Full Control NTFS permission of the folder.

Ok so according to this:
The "Share" button is for local sharing, "Advanced Sharing" is for network sharing. But the heading over the "Share" button says "Network File and Folder Sharing".
What's up with these buttons?
Thanks!

Hi,
>>What's up with these buttons?
As Kelvin suggested in the following thread, if we use Share button, the system will modify both Share permissions and NTFS permissions. If we use Advanced Sharing button, the system will just modify the sharing permission.
share vs advanced sharing options (only advanced access permissions work)
Besides, advanced sharing can also help us more granularly to configure share permissions.
