Office programs opening in wrong Virtual Desktop

Question

Tuesday, June 7, 2016 9:18 AM | 2 votes

If I use multiple virtual desktops to separate out projects that I am working on, for example 3 desktops, several of which will need to use the same Office 2010 programs. But if I already have an instance of an Office program open, say Word, in one virtual desktop, when a new one is opened in a different desktop, it reverts to the desktop in which the first instance of the program was opened in.

Is there any way to get round this or to get Office to always open a new instance in the virtual desktop it was opened in?

Hi DPashley,

See this thread:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/b175d9fb-fea2-47ae-95f2-d47086d88d01/windows-10-programs-dont-open-in-the-right-virtual-desktop?forum=win10itprogeneral

I think currently it is not available for Office program to work as the Virtual desktop.

To virtual Desktop, all word documents are treated as the same process.

And currently it has no workarounds available. This has already been submitted to the feedback tool.

A nice work around:

  • Open two virtual desktops (VD1 and VD2)
  • Open two Word docs in VD1
  • Hit WIN+tab and drag one of the word docs into VD2
  • Now you have a word doc in each VD
  • Subsequent word docs should open in the VD you are currently in

Hope this helps!

:( This doesn't help.  It seems to revert to the most recent active window, which is on a different virtual desktop when the current desktop has a minimized window
