Lack of Preview in Explorer for .XLSM files

Question

Tuesday, June 14, 2016 3:31 PM

Why can Windows 7 Preview not show Macro Enabled, Office 10 Excel Workbooks (.xlsm)?

If the Macro Workbook is from a Trusted Source and the Excel settings are correctly set to open the workbook, why should it not be possible to provide a preview of the content of the workbook without running any associated macros?

In my case I have an externally called calculation workbook that accepts a data set, performs some calculations and is then saved as a record of a test completed. In the past, we have used .xlsx workbooks with in-cell formulas and have always been able to preview the files - saving a lot of time. Not being able to preview the .xlsm files is making things very difficult for us as we have to open the files in Excel just to check the final test result.

Is there really no simple solution to this?

Many thanks in advance for anyone's help!!

Hi Richard Slack,

Did you mean you cannot preview .xlsm files in Windows 7?

As far as I know, .xlsm file format is not support to be previewed in Windows 7.

I suggest you try to refer to this similar case and reply of Andreas, maybe this can be a work around for you:

You can only get a "preview" when you saved a thumbnail before:

- Open an Excel file

  • File\SaveAs and choose a (the same) location
  • Check the "Save Thumbnail" check box
  • Click Save

After that you can see the thumbnail within the Windows Explorer and/or in the Open dialog when change the view to Icons.

The only other way is to use an Excel viewer:

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.
