Question

Hi,
Have been having trouble updating Windows 10. The Windows updater kicks off a few times a day and attempts to update, but each time after rebooting states that if failed and needs to restore to previous state.
Using the Media Creation tool, I encountered the following error
We couldn't install windows 10
We've set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing windows 10
0xC1900101- 0x30017
The installation failed in FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operations.
I disable my AV (Avast) and attempted via Media Creation Tool and got a similar error
We couldn't install windows 10
We've set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing windows 10
0xC1900101- 0x20017
The installation failed in SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operations
Reran the windows troubleshooter and after it applied fixes, ran via Media Creation Tool, and same error as above.
Lastly, I downloaded and ran Windows10Upgrade9252, and it again failed.
I checked all my drivers and non appear to have an issue. Looking at setuperr log, but I can't pinpoint what the issues are. There's 49GB of free space on my c drive.
Below is the extract from the log. Any advice would be appreciated

Hi
Are you sure there is enough free space on your system partition/volume?
Use disk cleanup to remove unused files and then update.
Note: 30GB or more free space may be needed

Thanks for your response. C:drive has 49GB free, but I'll run disk cleanup again.

1) Please list all antivirus AV/ firewall products on the computer since the last major windows upgrade.
2) And please list any encryption software in use other than Microsoft software.
3) Open disk management > post an image into the thread using one drive or drop box share links:
a) Use the information in this link to modify disk management before posting the image:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2503-disk-management-how-post-screenshot.html
4) Open the website for the computer or motherboard manufacturer > enter the product or serial number or model > view drivers and BIOS > post a URL or hyperlink into the thread
5) To evaluate the computer environment please post logs for troubleshooting.
Using administrative command prompt copy and paste this whole command:
Make sure the default language is English so that the logs can be scanned and read.
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3813-language-add-remove-change-windows-10-a.html
The command will automatically collect the computer files and place them on the desktop.
Then use one drive or drop box to place share links into the thread for troubleshooting.
It will automatically collect these files: msinfo32, dxdiag, mini dumps, drivers hosts, install, uninstall, services, startup, event viewer files, etc.
Open administrative command prompt and copy and paste the whole command:
copy %SystemRoot%\minidump\.dmp "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\&dxdiag /t %Temp%\dxdiag.txt© %Temp%\dxdiag.txt "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\SFdebugFiles\&type %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts >> "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\hosts.txt"&systeminfo > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\systeminfo.txt"&driverquery /v > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\drivers.txt" &msinfo32 /nfo "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\msinfo32.nfo"&wevtutil qe System /f:text > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\eventlog.txt"® export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\uninstall.txt"® export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components" "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\installed.txt"&net start > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\services.txt"&REM wmic startup list full /format:htable >"%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\startup.html"&wmic STARTUP GET Caption, Command, User >"%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\startup.txt"
- Sometimes the dxdiag file needs to be found and saved manually: In the left lower corner search type: dxdiag > When the DirectX Diagnostic Tool opens click on the next page button so that each tab is opened > click on save all information > save to desktop > post one drive or drop box share link into the thread

Thanks Momominta,
I've had AVAST since day one with Windows 10 on my laptop. I did disable it before trying to update my windows . I'll uninstall it and try the update and see how it goes.

There were multiple misbehaving drivers.
Uninstall Avast:
https://www.avast.com/en-us/uninstall-utility
Somehow many of the files were mixed together.
One changed form from NFO to txt.
Others were missing.
Please rerun this adminstrative command prompt command to collect files for troubleshooting.
When the files are on the desktop please keep them as separate files and post then using 7zip.
The msinfo32 needs to be in NFO.
copy %SystemRoot%\minidump\.dmp "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\&dxdiag /t %Temp%\dxdiag.txt© %Temp%\dxdiag.txt "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\SFdebugFiles\&type %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts >> "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\hosts.txt"&systeminfo > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\systeminfo.txt"&driverquery /v > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\drivers.txt" &msinfo32 /nfo "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\msinfo32.nfo"&wevtutil qe System /f:text > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\eventlog.txt"® export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\uninstall.txt"® export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components" "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\installed.txt"&net start > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\services.txt"&REM wmic startup list full /format:htable >"%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\startup.html"&wmic STARTUP GET Caption, Command, User >"%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\startup.txt"
Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
- sfc /scannow
- dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
- dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
- chkdsk /scan
- diskpart
- list disk
- select disk 0
- list volume
- list partition
- exit
- reagentc /info
- When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

Thanks questionsformicrosoftproducts.
I assume you were able to view the logs previously provided. I have uninstalled Avast and reran the commands you had provided (see below). Here are additional issues I have encountered now
- I am unable to boot to Safe Mode. I go through the process, select the option to restart in safe mode and nothing happens. It does not boot. Hence the avast uninstall was through the uninstall process and not via the exe (link you provided)
- I am now also getting an erro msg when I restart the laptop that there was an error with some h/w and Win10 does not start, but display error 0xc0000454.
Here are the latest.

The information above appears to be a repost of an earlier post?
To help others with the administrative command prompt command please indicate the difficulty encountered so that in the next thread others can run the command and post the troubleshooting logs that appear on the desktop.
When posting the logs to keeps them organized see if you are able to use 7zip.
Please indicate whether you can or cannot open this file:

Thanks questionsformicrosoftproducts,
The administrative command was easy to follow. The only additional items I would add is to state where to get the files from.
And yes, I can open the file https://www.dropbox.com/s/5l65e7spee3ujq6/msinfo32.nfo?dl=0. I had to save it as dropbox msg was that the file was too big.
I have put all the files in 7zip : https://www.dropbox.com/s/b19gmnmdwmvt385/Uploads.7z?dl=0
Also, after I ran all the commands again, I was able to get into SafeMode, but still unable to execute the avastcleanup.
Lastly, Windows 10 update assistant ran again but failed to install the update.

There were files posted without names.
The names were not evident until they were downloaded.
This file could not be opened with 5 attempts:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5l65e7spee3ujq6/msinfo32.nfo?dl=0
Each attempt displayed msinfo32 failed - download error.
The other files were able to be viewed.
Wednesday, February 21, 2018 3:19 AM
Hmm. I can open it, download it etc. Have you had this issue before?
Here is the link unzipped :https://www.dropbox.com/s/5l65e7spee3ujq6/msinfo32.nfo?dl=0
Also, here's a copy of it where I changed it to notepad type. If you save it and change the Open back to system info, will that work? (I tested it on my laptop and appears to work) https://www.dropbox.com/s/3a4h4eh0z03x96d/msinfo32%20notepad.nfo?dl=0

Very strange indeed. Of all of the files that were posted they all opened except for msinfo32.
After viewing your reply a different browser was used (IE) and it opened.
So it is unclear what the problem is with Chrome.
For the failure to upgrade there have been multiple computer problems found.
So expectations need to change.
The plan now is to tune up the computer.
There were multiple misbehaving drivers identified.
Misbehaving drivers can prevent Windows upgrades.
So the plan now is to fix the underlying computer problems as they are found.
Then there will be an upgrade checklist to follow.
An upgrade attempt will be made after running through the checklist.
Then new failure logs will be generated (Panther logs).
then the new logs will be troubleshooted to see if there is a problem that can be identified to fix the failure.
If you are lucky the test upgrade could work.
But again the plan now is to tune up the computer.

That sounds ominous questionsformicrosoftproducts.
I did have an issue with Wester Digital external drive software and had to uninstall it today. It has worked perfectly for the past 2 weeks (wanted to have a backup of my work documents, pictures etc).
Should I sacrifice a chicken or goat to the Computer gods ? :-)

There were multiple misbehaving Avast software drivers.
There was 1 misbehaving hardware driver: Intel graphics driver
There is mismatched RAM.
There were many corrected hardware errors.
There were many crash dump failed.
.
.
Mismatched RAM can cause unstable computer or unpredictable computer environments.
At this time the misbehaving drivers (hardware and software will be fixed).
It may be necessary to remove one of the RAM modules so that there is no longer any mismatched RAM.
.
.
The operating system: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 14393) (14393.rs1_release.180209-1727)

7) Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 passes.
http://www.memtest.org/
This may take hours so plan to run it overnight.
a) Please make sure you use the Memtest86+ version 5.01 with the link below.
http://www.memtest.org/
The testing is done not by time but by passes.
The more passes the better.
There are a significant number of false negatives if fewer than 8 passes are made.
A false negative is a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.
There is 16 GB of RAM on the computer.
Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM each for 8 or more passes.
b) When Memtest86+ has completed 8 or more passes use a camera or smart phone camera to take a picture and post an image into the thread.

Hi,
Have you redirected your user profile folder to another location?
Also, I noticed that some errors happened on driver, core components, registry keys and Hash:
2018-02-19 20:45:26, Error [SetupPlatform.exe] winreHashWimFile: Failed to hash [C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\WinRE]: 0x5
At this time, I recommend you to refresh your original systems by using Windows recovery option after backing up your personal files, then download the installation media via Media creation tool, do the upgrade install again.
Refresh steps refer to https://www.onmsft.com/news/windows-10-reset-refresh-windows-10-installation-better-performance
Then, upgrade refer to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10.

Hi Kate,
Have not redirected my user profile. What would normally cause this to occur? The only thing I redirected was my iPhone backups to be copied across from C: to D: drive.
Also, what does "errors happened on driver, core components, registry keys and Hash" mean and what would cause this?
Sine the start of this year, the only things that I have done are
- Activated Dashlane
- Installed Wester Digital external drive (backed up all my files since I started having issues).
I did run MS Troubleshooter, here is the latest output. It always discovers the same issue, says it's fixed but running it a few seconds later finds the same issues (one's in pdf and the other in word format) https://www.dropbox.com/s/vs0ycg0jdzmx8n8/Troubleshooter%20210218.pdf?dl=0
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ictpg1izqtpyzge/windows%20updat1.docx?dl=0
I'll have to consider when to refresh to original, as I am currently supporting a client in Canada, and I have client specific vpn and tokens that I need. It's a little far to go to have these reinstalled.

OK first, this error is very general, there are 30-40 things that will give this same error message (hence the need to look at the log files). I have tried at least (not exaggerating) 3-4 dozen suggestions to fix this issue. If you have tried every other suggestion you have found and still can’t upgrade to Windows 10 try this.
Move the hard drive connection on the motherboard from where it is at (probably labeled something like “hdd0”) to where your CD/DVD drive is connected (Probably labeled “SATA0”) If you need the DVD drive for the upgrade plug it into “SATA1”. You may need to change BIOS to allow booting. Start the system and allow it to boot in to Windows. If you are doing an in-place upgrade (I was) run the installer now. If not, restart and boot from your installation media. After (if) the upgrade is successful you can change the drive connections back. I had 3 systems out of 20 that would hang during install and/or return this error after reboot. Doing this worked to upgrade all 3.
Hope this helps you.
P.S. The DISM commands (>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth for example) that are recommended, do not work in Windows 7. Instructions/suggestions don’t make this clear.
Background info: 20 systems, all running Windows 7 with latest updates, 15 Identical Dell Precision T7500s purchased at the same time, 3 Dell PrecisionT7500s identical to the first 15 but purchased later, 2 Dell T5600 Precisions purchased most recently. Of these systems, 1 of the original 15, 1 of the 3 added later and 1 of the 2 T5600, had the same error upgrading. The other 17 systems had zero problems upgrading.
