Question

This has just started in the last few days and all Windows 10 updates have been applied. Messages that use images for links are replaced with a red X and a message that the "Linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Verify that the link points to the correct file and location."
The computer is Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and I have a Office 365 Home subscription. The Outlook 2016 is updated, which may have caused this problem in the first place. This includes the UPS My Choice e-mail notification e-mail, one from National Geographic, and The Upworthyiest daily e-mail. Others appear to be fine. I checked my security settings regarding downloading images under File|Outlook Options|Trust Center|Automatic Downloads and the option "Don't download pictures automatically in HTML email messages or RSS items" is unchecked. Not sure what other settings might affect this but again, it's only on some select e-mails that had been fine just a few days ago. I do know that there were new Windows updates that included Office 365 but can't say that's the issue. It isn't a big deal but it is a bit annoying so anyone have some suggestions on troubleshooting I'd welcome the feedback.

Hi Steve,
What's you detailed Outlook version? Click File > Office Account > About Outlook to check it. Then check the following settings:
Exit Outlook and open Registry Editor (regedit.exe). Locate and confirm if there is the following subkey.
•Without Group Policy:
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Common
DWORD: BlockHTTPimages
Value: 1
•With Group Policy:
Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\policies\Microsoft\Office\x.0\Common
DWORD: BlockHTTPimages
Value: 1
If that is the case, please right-click the BlockHTTPimages key, and then click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.
If that is not the cause of the issue, please add the problematic senders to the safe senders list of the Junk E-mail filter option to have a try. Also disable any COM add-ins in Outlook 2016 (File > Options > Add-ins, Manage COM Add-ins, click Go) to check if the issue persists.

Tried to reply with screen shots attached but it wouldn't let me. So no, none of this worked. There is no DWORD: BlockHTTPimages , all problem email addresses have been added to Safe Senders list, and all COM Add-ins are disabled. Restarts of both Windows 10 and Outlook make no difference. This seems to have happened after a Windows update 1-2 weeks ago. Looking through updates it only shows the last 9 applied, no history which isn't helpful at all.
Thanks,
Steve

Am I the only person with this issue? I can't imagine this being so hard to solve. I may just give up using 365 Home and go back to Office 2003. It never gave me these issues.

Hi Steve,
I've been having the same problem where some pictures weren't displaying in Outlook 2016 either. As an experiment I reset the Internet Explorer settings to their default settings (Control Panel / Internet Options / Advanced tab) and it cleared up the problem in Outlook. I'm not sure what was set incorrectly in IE, but apparently Outlook uses IE to display pictures and something was set incorrectly there.

Hello, no, you're not the only one ! I have the exact same problem, resetting IE settings didn't work for me. I had also a problem with the RSS feeds, they were not working any more, so I deleted them, and when i try to put them back , I have the "Outlook cannot process the RSS content from http://www.zdnet... The link may not point to a valid RSS source. "
Which is wrong.

Hi. I know I'm late chiming in, but what if you don't even have those registry keys? I get as far as "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\policies\Microsoft\Office\ and then there are several "x.o" entries - all of which I checked and none of which continue with "\Common
DWORD: BlockHTTPimages". It's entirely possible that I'm doing something wrong, but I really don't think so.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

That's great for you but I use Chrome and I see red x's all over the place. I cannot believe a multi-billion dollar company life microsoft is just ignoring so many customers. If I don't see a solution soon it's Libre Office for me instead of Office 365.

For me the problem eventually went away, came back, then disappeared again. I never replied as to seeing an answer that worked because I don't think any of them actually did. I think MS may have done some things in updates that had an effect but that remains to be seen.
So at this point I don't think there has been a one answer works for all. I blame most of this on less than good Windows 10 updates that seem to have ill effects at times on programs but you would think they could test them on their own before releasing. That's why my important systems that run in observatories for imaging sessions still run Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. There are too many wonky things going on in 10 to trust it. I've had my settings reset after updates, like when it can reboot which is something you don't want an observatory computer doing during an imaging run at night. And pushing updates.

Thanks for posting this fix Mike. I had exactly the same problem when I installed Outlook 2016. (No problem with eM Client, Mailbird or Thunderbird.) You simple fix of selecting Internet Explorer defaults fixed the problem.

Me too, MIke. I had the problem with Outlook 2007. Nothing would sort it until your simple fix! Many thanks.
Seems astonishing how little, if any, recognition is given by MS to such fixes which must point straight to the root cause of the problem(s).
Cheers.

Thanks Steve,
I found this helpful as well. Using Outlook / Office 365 and pictures were not showing up in emails, forcing me to open Microsoft Edge to view pictures.
Resetting IE settings to default solved the problem.

The only solution to this for me was doing this:
Internet Options Encrypted Page Setting
In Internet Explorer go to (Tools), Internet Options, Advanced tab. Look under the Security section for Do not save encrypted files to disk. Untick this setting and Apply. Restart Outlook and you should be fixed. (If you don't use Internet Explorer, you can go to Control panel, Internet Options or just type Internet Options in the Start menu Search.)

I have tried resetting IE setting to default, it works momentarily then reverts back to the red x.

Thank you very much! This resolved my issue applying a minimal quantity of modifications to my setup.
Thank you!

Musse75's solution ^ worked for me to fix the same "Linked Images" issue in Outlook 2010. I did not have the BlockHTTPImages subkey in my registry, as was suggested to look for here. I did not want to reset my IE settings, some of which are controlled by domain policy anyway, so I followed Musse75's instructions and the problem disappeared. Finally!

Worked for me on Outlook 2016

After having this same issue pop up on me yesterday I went through all the above and other potential solutions. None of them worked. After trying the In Internet Explorer go to (Tools), Internet Options, Advanced tab. Look under theSecurity section for Do not save encrypted files to disk. Untick this setting andApply. Restart Outlook and you should be fixed. (If you don't use Internet Explorer, you can go to Control panel, Internet Options or just type Internet Options in the Start menu Search.)" it dawned on me to check the TLS security check boxes as these have to be checked for various downloads etc. Mine were not checked. I checked the check boxes for Use TLS 1.0, Use TLS 1.1, and Use TLS 1.2 . Clicked OK then restarted Outlook 2016 and poof there were the missing images in various emails.
Not sure this solves everyone's issue with no images in emails within Outlook 2016, but it worked for me.

This is so hopeless. I've been putting up with this for over a year now and have tried all this stuff and nothing fixes it. I even opened a support incident with Microsoft and spent hours and hours with them and they ultimately were completely perplexed and had no idea what to do. All this on a fairly new machine that shipped from the factory with Windows 10 and with the latest Office 365. Sometimes it is worse and sometimes it is better but it always comes back. Today I downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird and will see if I can switch over to that. This is one of those bugs that Microsoft is just not going to fix, or is incapable of fixing.

OMG: This worked. I'm not a techy so didn't want to mess with the Registry, so tried this with Internet Options and it worked. Thanks Mike.

Hi Mike, Many thanks, this fixed my problem. I thought it had something to do with the new VPN feature Kaspersky Connect I had just installed. You saved me from embarrassing myself by shouting at them.
Cheers

I am not finding the BlockHTTPimages either. I've also tried to reset IE and that didn't work. The "click here to download pictures..." message doesn't display at all anymore.
