Mobile Hotspot network won't connect through Windows 10 VPN

Question

Friday, December 15, 2017 11:29 PM

I am trying to setup a mobile hotspot network connecting to the internet through my VPN on Windows 10 Fall 2017 edition. I can successfully do this to connect through my Ethernet connection: turn on mobile hotspot; share from my Ethernet connection; set Ethernet adaptor properties to let other network users connect through this adaptor with the mobile hotspot network selected.

Then I tried to do this but have the mobile hotspot network connect through my VPN . The problem is that the mobile hotspot settings don’t show this virtual adaptor so I cannot select it. The VPN adaptor has a share tab on properties that allows me to allow network users from the hotspot network to connect through it. I think if only the mobile hotspot settings showed this VPN adaptor/connection as an option it would work.

The VPN adaptor is Windows 10 Built-in with connection to my third party (StrongVPN) provider. The VPN adaptor/connection works fine from my PC.

Has Microsoft decided not to allow mobile hotspot networks to connect through their built-in VPN or is there some system parameter , e.g. a registry entry?, that can be changed to have the VPN connection show up in the mobile hotspot settings?

Hi,

Please try the following methods and see if they can help you.

Method 1: Run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter

This troubleshooter is an automated Windows inbuilt tool which finds and fixes the common issues with the Network Adapter Settings on the computer. It also checks if the network adapter drivers are up to date or not. It may also provide you some clue about the hardware failures happening to the Network Adapter. Perform these steps to run this tool and check if that helps.

a) Open Start menu.

b) Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “Enter”.

c) In the “Troubleshooting” window, click on “View All” on the left pane.

d) Click on “Network Adapter”.

e) Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.

f) Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

If issue still persists try method 2.

Method 2:

I would suggest you to reinstall or udate the network drivers from the manufacturer website and check.

Hello Momominta,

I'm not sure I am following you. There isn't a System and Security control in the control panel. I went to start menu > windows administrative tools and didn't see what you mentioned there. I went to start menu > windows administrative tools >services and didn't see it there. I also looked in the registry. What is the path that I should follow on Windows 10 2017 fall edition? Also, I am not running Windows Defender. I am running Norton Security.

Hello Momominta,

Ah! What was confusing me was the first step. I have forever viewed my control panel by large icons and forgot that it could be viewed by category which then aligns with your first step. When I realized this I went to the administrative tools icon.

I set a new tunnel rule but am still confused about why I am doing this. Remember, I have a third party VPN (StrongVPN) which I created a connection to using the Windows 10 built-in VPN settings. This creates a virtual network adapter with an IPv4 address. I created a Mobile Hotspot network which has an IPv4 address and connects through my ethernet connection. What I need to do is bridge the mobile hotspot network through the VPN adapter to the ethernet connection. I don't see how I can do this using tunnel endpoints in the method you described.

Hello Momominta

Yes, that is how I have connected the mobile hotspot network to the internet via my ethernet connection. This works fine and I can connect any device from the mobile hotspot to the internet. What I cannot do is make that connection through my VPN. The reason I want to connect through the VPN is that I am out of the US and want to access Amazon streaming videos with my Roku device on the hotspot network.

Maybe this is not possible?
