Question
Thursday, November 29, 2018 2:58 AM
I have macOS Mojave version 10.4 and Microsoft Word 2016 version 15.21.1. I have used Word for two years and just the other day my drop down menus are not working. For example, if I go to the insert tab and then click on the "table" dropdown, nothing comes up. Usually a grid pops up so you can select the size you want. Now I have to use the insert button at the very top of my screen, select table and manually enter the number of rows and columns. Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated.

Hi,
Did this problem appear in all Word documents?
Did all drop down menus in Ribbon not working?
How about other Office applications?
First please try to check if you use Keyboard shortcuts to use the problem options in Ribbon. About Keyboard shortcuts for Word please refer to this support article:
Then if possible, please try to uninstall Office for MAC completely and then re-install Office:
Any updates please let me know and I'm glad to help you.
Regards,
Emi

It happens in all Word documents. Some of the drop downs are working, for example, the insert shape dropdown works, but most of the others do not. It happens in other office applications too.
It's strange because I used to have that ribbon across the top that says Home, Insert, Design, Layout, etc. come up on my documents right away. But now when I open the application, they aren't there until I click this little circle in the top right hand corner that has those options as a drop down. Once I click one, they all show up. Is this just some weird update that happened?

Hi,
You said you're using >>Word 2016 version 15.21.1<< as far as I know 15.XX.XX is earlier version of Office for MAC. Did you provide the wrong version number?
Could you provide a screenshot about the Ribbon you're using?
Regards,
Emi

I'm seeing the same issue. It started today when I updated to macOS Mojave 10.14, and I'm using Word/Powerpoint 15.12.3.
None of the drop downs are working in the ribbon menu. The buttons appear to toggle (they go dark), but the menu never shows. Have you come across a solution?

Hello Emi,
I seem to have the same issue as mhan13 which was not the case for MacBook Pro 2014 model with the same OS. The issue with with drop downs not working in all Office 2016 for Mac applications, i.e. Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The versions are:
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint: 15.21.1 (160411), pls see attached pic.
- Newly installed Mac Book Pro 2018, macOSMojave 10.14.2., pls see attached pic.
- How it looks like, pls see attached pics.
- I did reinstalled the MSOffice and reinstalled and it did not help.
Unfortunately this web does not let me post neither pictures nor proper links. Pls verify my account so I can post pictures or link to where these pictures are stored.
...or pls try to reversed this link via web service that you can easily find on web :)

I am also experiencing the same issue. In any of the Office applications, the drop down menus of the Ribbon buttons are not working. I also have Mojave.
Is there any way to avoid this issue?
Thanks,

Lucky you. - Not me. I reinstalled and it did not help. - I would guess that everyone with the same problem tried to reinstall at least once.

I'm having the same problem. It's been happening for about a month or so... I just updated my Mac Mojave but that didn't help with Microsoft. On Excel & Word, I can't find updates for them. My font & font size menus are working, but no other arrow menus work :(

Use the link that "kayla3214" suggest, this is the fix. You need to update your microsoft office packages, but you can't as it says they are up to date. This is because you need the new updater, install that and then update them to the current 16.16.8 for excell for example and you have your fix.

Hello kayla3214,
you had inspired me. When I used the file as you suggest, it started to claim that I have no licence for MS Office at all... for some unexplainable reason only people at Microsoft may possibly know...
Anyway, as I was challenged by Microsoft that I have no legal MS Office I did bother to logon to their website: www.office.com/myaccount. Here I was told that I actually have a licence to MS Office 2016... what a service - Anyway, what is important though is that there is also an INSTALLER file to download. So, I uninstalled everything again, rebooted, cleaned some directories to got rid of post installations directories (pls search on web), rebooted and used the downloaded install file which was in my specific case Microsoft_Office_16.16.19031202_Installer.pkg. And now drop down menus are working again...
MANY thanks to the community, ZERO thanks to Microsoft support.

I recommend trying Check For Updates from the Help menu. Repeat until no more updates are found.

It took over half an hour but updating all Microsoft products on my old MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013 with Mojave v.10.14.5 WORKED! The drop downs are working again, such as Inserting a Table. Also, Word is in DARK MODE!

Hello!
I shared similar problems regarding the drop down menus and ribbons as originally described by mhan13, and would like to thank kayla3214 for the link to download the latest installer, and all contributions thus far to this forum thread!
Unfortunately, after doing so, I have encountered a similar problem to yours, where I am unable to activate MS Office as Microsoft cannot find any license under my account. I have tried clearing installer by adding it to Trash and then emptying it, followed by restarting my laptop, and then following the link to download the installer again, but Microsoft still claims it cannot find any license under my account.
Is there a need to uninstall MS Office and install it again, as you have done?
Would appreciate any advice regarding this issue. Thank you!
