Question

Hello All,
Looking for some feedback from the community. We have an environment where most users sync their SharePoint online document libraries to their local desktop. Most of the time users work out of their desktop versions, that gets automatically synced to the online libraries.
Issue: We have had this unique issue of documents getting automatically getting deleted and ending up in the recycle bins. If we try to restore it as an admin the restore does not work, it does not allow to restore the files. Manual restore gives prompt that the files already exist in the designated folders when they do not, also folders started appearing in other sites where they do not belong.
Was wondering if anyone has insight into this issue and can provide some steps to resolve it.
thanks for your help!

Hi Ajay Mandal,
You could check if there is retention policy to delete the document in admin center in SharePoint online.
Go to Office 365 admin center>Security & Compliance>Data Governance>Retention, check if there is any related policy to delete the document from the document library.
And you could check if there is retention policy to delete the document in the document library. For more detailed information, refer to the article below.
How to set up retention and deletion policies for files and folders in SharePoint.

And if the users delete files on their computers after syncing the library, the files will be removed to the recycle bin in SharePoint Online.
Then you could check if the files are deleted files on the computers by the users.

Hi Sara,
Thanks for your feedback. There is not retention policy on any of the document library nor has been configured at the admin level. I can try and change the permission level on the library to not delete, however some of my users do need the ability to delete documents. Any other suggestion you can provide? thanks,
Ajay Mandal

Hi Ajay Mandal,
If the user has the permission to delete document, then he can delete the document.
If the user does not have the permission to delete document, then he cannot delete the document.
There is no other way to change or avoid this.

Hi Sara,
Just to clarify, no one is deleting the documents, it is happening at random!
